November 25, 2024 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked trusted source written by researcher(s) proofread by Marius Zoican, The Conversation Gamification is rapidly reshaping how people consume information and engage with the world. It uses strategies such as clear goals, instant rewards and engaging visuals to make everyday tasks more enjoyable, often in a digital setting. The COVID-19 pandemic nudged consumers to embrace no-contact, instant gratification experiences in an increasingly digital world. Businesses found that gamification attracts new customers while keeping the existing ones engaged. As evidenced by the meteoric rise of the Robinhood investment app, even trading platforms haven't been able to escape the pull of gamification. While trading gamification attracts new and younger investors to financial markets , a key question arises: do digital engagement strategies shape investor behavior? Flashy features and poor financial decisions In recent years, fierce competition among online brokers has pushed them to stand out with features beyond lower fees. To boost trading activity, many brokers have implemented gamified features ranging from vibrant colors and celebratory animations, to social ranking boards and frequent price alerts. My recent research shows that these strategies are particularly effective for new investors with lower financial literacy. While it's effective at attracting users, gamification can lead inexperienced traders to make poor decisions by magnifying their behavioral biases. My co-researchers and I studied the effect of gamification on retail traders' behavior using a randomized online experiment. The results echo the widespread concerns that gamification fuels investors' competitive instincts and their urge to "hit big." Turning trading into a casino-like experience encourages reckless decision-making. Infamous long-term investor Warren Buffett has also expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of "instant gratification" on investor behavior. He believes that "too many modern investors have become entranced by speculative investing" and are "simply buying stocks that are trendy." While it's important to introduce the younger generation to financial markets, Buffett's warning resonates at a deeper level. Is the increasingly gamified trading environment equipping new investors with the skills and confidence to build a strong financial future, or is it designed to exploit their weaknesses? And ultimately, how can technology be leveraged to build a healthier, more sustainable economy? Who benefits from financial literacy? My co-researchers and I argue that both retail investors and intermediaries ultimately benefit from boosting financial literacy from an early age—that is, before plunging into the wild waters of financial markets. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with individual investors to take the initiative to understand the fundamentals of financial markets and risk management. By seeking out knowledge before entering markets, they can reduce their risk and become aware of their biases and blind spots. Traders who don't prioritize their education may end up learning the reality of markets the hard way—often through losses in post-mortem reflection. At the same time, brokerages and trading platforms have both a profit-driven and an ethical stake in promoting financial literacy. Informed users are more likely to become loyal long-term customers who engage more deeply with platforms and trading responsibly over time. Financially literate traders benefit from gamification techniques like price notifications, which allow them to correct their mistakes faster. From an ethical standpoint, financial institutions must reflect on whether they would rather empower a new generation of investors or merely turn them into gamblers. Financial education is key School systems' improved or renewed efforts to empower students to navigate the economy safely and productively have received significant attention in light of both post-pandemic and inflationary economic challenges. As students move up the education ladder, they could learn about more sophisticated financial products, such as leverage, derivatives or alternative investments. However, the financial world is growing ever more complex with the inclusion of novel products such as cryptocurrencies and leveraged funds . Every investor faces—or will eventually face—unique financial challenges. The real question is: how can we improve investors' financial literacy at scale without expecting everyone to earn the equivalent of a business degree? AI and the future of financial education This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in. AI is experiencing rapid growth and can adapt learning plans based on users' existing knowledge, unique planning needs, learning pace and preferred engagement formats. This adaptability makes AI a powerful tool for creating learning opportunities for investors by catering to varying learning needs. Wide-scale collaboration among regulators, business educators and financial markets could lead to innovative programs using scalable, user-friendly tools such as chatbots. Such an approach would help improve financial literacy on a large scale and enable evidence-based policy by observing investor behavior. Improving financial literacy is urgent. As a new generation of traders enters gamified investing, they risk losing their savings due to poor decisions, behavioral biases and excessive trading . Early losses can stunt a generation's future wealth prospects and set them back years, if not decades. Only investors with strong critical thinking skills and self-control will progress from beginners to experienced traders and avoid falling prey to impulsive decisions. 1 kg mephedrone seized from drug manufacturer in MedchalEunisell reports positive 2024 first quarter financial resultsMTN Nigeria Communications PLC (MTN Nigeria), the nation’s largest mobile network operator, saw its market capitalisation soar by N388.42 billion after news surfaced that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is considering an upward review of telecom tariffs 10 years after telcos began lobbying. MTN Nigeria, with 80.38 million subscribers, closed trading with a market cap of N3.69 trillion on Friday. By Monday, this rose to N3.74 trillion, reaching N4.07 trillion on Tuesday. Its share price followed suit, climbing from N175.50 to N178 and N194. Trading volume fluctuated, rising from 2.55 million to 3.32 million before falling to 1.58 million. “After that update about a potential price increase, investors have swung to action immediately,” tweeted Rufybaba, an investment manager. However, Airtel Africa Plc, with 54.45 million subscribers, experienced no movement in its stock price over the same period, staying flat at N2,156.90 per share with a market cap of N8.11 trillion. It is important to note that the telco is in the middle of a share buyback program. Sector Challenges The telecom sector has struggled with foreign exchange fluctuations and a harsh operating environment. Both telcos have reported losses due to FX volatility. In 2023, MTNN and Airtel recorded a combined N1.29 trillion in FX losses. For the nine months ending October 2024, MTN Nigeria reported a N514.93 billion loss despite a 33.7 percent growth in service revenue to N2.37 trillion. It declared negative earnings per share (EPS) of N24.51 kobo in the period. Airtel’s revenue for the same period fell 46.9 percent to $755 million. Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, described the sector as being in crisis. “Investments will not continue to come. No one will put in a dollar and continue to get 66 cents... We are in a big crisis,” he said. Read also: MTNN raises N72.18bn from CP issuance as offer sees 144% subscription MTN and Airtel have cut back on network infrastructure investments due to mounting operational costs and FX exposure. Between January and September 2024, MTN’s core capital expenditure (capex) dropped 27.79 percent to N217.64 billion, while Airtel’s capex fell by 36.59 percent to $149 million. This decline has left Nigerians grappling with unreliable networks. To adjust, telcos have advocated for increased tariff prices, especially as their average revenue per user (ARPU) continues to fall. The ARPU of telecom companies declined by 40.87 percent to $1.85 in the quarter ending September 2024, compared to $3.12 in the same period in 2023. MTN’s ARPU dropped from $3.24 to $2.09, while Airtel’s fell from $3 to $1.60. “There should be no delusion; if the tariff doesn’t go up, we will shut down,” Toriola of MTNN emphasised. Following months of lobbying, Bosun Tijani, the minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has finally acknowledged the need for price adjustments, stating, “We think there may be a need for that” in a December 20 interview on Arise TV. A report by TechCabal suggests that the NCC is likely to approve new tariffs for calls, SMS, and internet bundles, with changes expected to take effect in January 2025. While the exact figures remain unclear, a 2022 proposal by telcos requested a 40 percent hike. “This is a critical moment for the industry,” Gbenga Adebayo, chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), emphasized the importance of a review. “It will be a very good development, and by this, the Government has been able to rescue the sector from imminent collapse. It is the best for the progress of the industry and our digital economy,” Despite this, the NCC is reportedly cautious about the financial burden on Nigerians, who are already dealing with record-high inflation of 34.6 percent as of November. Adebayo noted that while operators are aware of the financial stress Nigerians are facing, a price review is imperative for improved network quality. “We fully understand and appreciate the financial stress that Nigerians are experiencing today. Prices will need to rise, but action needs to be measured through sustainable conversations and partnerships with the government. It is time to address this head-on,” he added.

NEW YORK — A familiar face will help the Jets with their general manager and coaching search. Gang Green has hired The 33rd Team, founded by former Jets General manager and senior vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum, to help them find candidates for their general manager and coaching vacancies, according to sources. Former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman will also help Tannenbaum identify candidates for the roles. The 33rd Team will also provide data analysis and experience to assist the Jets in seeking new leadership. The Jets fired both general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh during this season. Owner Woody Johnson fired Saleh on Oct. 8 and Douglas on Nov. 19. Johnson will supervise both the general manager and coaching searches but will receive help from The 33rd Team and others within the Jets organization, who will also be involved in the search. Spielman was an advisor to the Commanders in 2024 in their search for the team’s new head coach and general manager. Washington ultimately hired Adam Peters as its general manager and Dan Quinn as coach. The Commanders currently have a 7-5 record and have been one of the surprise teams in the league this season. Tannebaum started with the Jets organization in 1997 as a director of player contracts. He became the team’s director of pro player development in 2000 and later the general manager and director of pro personnel from 2006-12. Tannebaum was also the last general manager to have significant success for the Jets. He was the architect of the Jets teams that went to back-to-back AFC Championships in 2009 and 2010. Since then, the Jets have missed the playoffs for 13 consecutive seasons, the longest playoff drought in North American sports. Under Tannebaum, the Jets drafted cornerstone players such as Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, and Nick Mangold. He also hired former Jets coaches Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan during his tenure as general manager. In 2012, Tannebaum was fired following the Jets 6-10 record. In 2015, Tannebaum became the Dolphins executive vice president of football operations until owner Stephen Ross fired him in 2018. The Jets previous three general managers following Tannenbaum’s departure, John Idzik Jr., Mike Maccagnan, and Douglas, all failed to make the playoffs during their tenures. Maccagnan is the only Jets general manager to record a winning record (2015) since 2010. Gang Green is officially in rebuild mode after Johnson fired Saleh and Douglas. The team entered the 2024 season with not just playoff expectations but Super Bowl aspirations. But with a 3-8 record with six games, the Jets are poised to miss the playoffs for the 14th straight season. After beginning the season 2-3, Johnson fired Saleh and made defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich interim coach. Johnson felt like the Jets were underachieving after calling the roster the best during his 25 seasons as owner. Since Johnson fired Saleh, the Jets are 1-5 and are tied for last place in the AFC East with the Patriots. During the bye last week, Johnson fired Douglas so the team could begin their general manager and coaching search. Douglas was in the final year of his contract, which he signed in 2019. The Jets are one of two coaching vacancies currently open. The Saints fired coach Dennis Allen on Nov. 4 following a 2-7 start. The Jets can currently interview any potential candidate who does not work for an NFL team. If they want to interview candidates currently working for any of the 32 teams, the Jets will have to wait until Jan. 5, the conclusion of the regular season. ©2024 New York Daily News. The New York Jets will have another formidable matchup against a division leader when they host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday coming out of their bye week. Aside from their offensive line, the Jets' offense has stayed relatively healthy this season, especially when it comes to their starting weapons. However, they could be missing of the of their few bright spots on Sunday. © Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports Running back Breece Hall, who has averaged five yards-per-carry the last four weeks, missed practice on Wednesday with a knee injury. His status for Sunday is currently uncertain. If Hall, who leads the team with 1,033 scrimmage yards, isn't able to play on Sunday, the Jets will likely turn to rookie Braelon Allen to be the "emergency'' plan to carry the team's run game. Allen, who is the youngest active player in the NFL at 20-years-old, has shown flashes of potential throughout his rookie year as both a running and receiving threat. Related: Should Jets Let Aaron Rodgers Decide Future with Team? He's currently second on the team in rushing behind Hall with 229 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Aside from Hall, he is the only other player on the roster that has a rushing touchdown this season. In Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans, Allen brought in both a rushing and a receiving touchdown. He was then named the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for his performance in one of the Jets' few wins this season. While New York's playoff chances are extremely slim this late in the season, it would still be nice for Allen to have a great performance with the team beginning to look towards their future. Related: Cowboys Icon Tyron Smith Forced to Make Major Jets DecisionTEHRAN – Iran has commenced operating new advanced centrifuges following a contentious International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf announced. "Iran's reciprocal response to the political misuse of the IAEA's Board of Governors was immediately put on the agenda," Ghalibaf stated during Sunday's parliamentary session, confirming that "a series of new and advanced centrifuges has been launched." The move follows the IAEA Board of Governors' recent resolution, which passed with 19 votes in favor, 3 against, and 12 abstentions. It condemns Iran for “insufficient cooperation” with the UN nuclear watchdog under the JCPOA without addressing the West’s continuous shunning of the deal. Shortly after the resolution was enacted, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a joint statement declaring the country's plans to enhance uranium enrichment capacity and speed up the development of advanced centrifuge technology. Ghalibaf denounced the "unrealistic, politicized, and destructive approach" of the European troika and the U.S., noting that it resulted in the issuance of the “unjustified and non-consensus” resolution concerning Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities. The Parliament Speaker also addressed the recent International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former War Minister Yoav Gallant. Ghalibaf remarked that "80 years of lies and whitewashing of Israel’s heinous crimes have become ineffective due to the martyrdom of tens of thousands of civilians, as well as Resistance leaders in Gaza and Lebanon." He added that the ruling against “two of the most egregious war criminals in contemporary history” represents the first step in a series of actions against Israeli murderers for their atrocities in Gaza and Lebanon. Israel's brutal onslaught since October 2023 has resulted in over 44,000 martyrs in Gaza and 3,600 in Lebanon, with widespread displacement of civilians in both regions. Ghalibaf concluded his address by extending his condolences to the government and people of Pakistan following a recent terrorist attack, affirming Iran's commitment to supporting regional security cooperation.Conference title games a chance at a banner, bragging rights and, for some, a season-wrecking loss

Sindh Premium Property Exhibition attracts provincial lawmakersNEW YORK , Dec. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Council for Autism Service Providers (CASP) honored ABA Centers, the nation's fastest growing autism care provider, by partnering to ring the iconic Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange together. Lorri Unumb , Chief Executive Officer of CASP; Christopher Barnett , Founder & Chairman of ABA Centers; and his daughter, Madison Mulvey , were the official bell ringers during the 1 pm ceremony, marking an early close of the markets in preparation for the upcoming Christmas holiday. ABA Centers was founded as a testament to a father's love for his daughter, sparked from Mr. Barnett's personal experience attempting to acquire a diagnosis and then quality care for his own child, Ms. Mulvey, who spent years dealing with a misdiagnosis and missing out on the proper treatment that she desperately needed. What Mr. Barnett experienced as the parent of a child on the spectrum – the inadequacies, the lack of services available, and the long wait lists within the autism care system – were simply unacceptable. As a longtime healthcare entrepreneur, Mr. Barnett recognized that he already harnessed the infrastructure to effectuate real change within the autism care industry, so he set out to create a mission-driven organization, where every employee throughout the corporate and clinical teams is dedicated to making a lasting impact in the lives of autistic children and their families. "I hope that the sound waves of this bell ringing transcend the trading floor and serve as a rally call for quick, compassionate, and top quality autism care across our country," remarked Mr. Barnett. "Seeing CASP and ABA Centers on the New York Stock Exchange podium should encourage other decision makers and deal makers alike to find ways in which they can positively impact the autism care industry further because there are millions of children currently languishing on wait lists and missing out on the autism care that they deserve during the most crucial times." In 2024, ABA Centers achieved the following monumental milestones, which served to amplify its commitment to providing every kid in the country with world class autism care: "For mission-driven organizations like CASP and ABA Centers, this bell ringing ceremony offers a platform to amplify our message and highlight the importance of autism care, as well as the challenges faced by the autism community, to a robust and influential audience," stated Mrs. Unumb. Mrs. Unumb and Mr. Barnett were joined on the bell ringing podium by the C-suite of ABA Centers: Jason Barker ; Joseph Heilner ; Kristy Johnson ; Quatiba Davis; Michael Holohan ; Michael Holzum ; Michael Holzum, Jr. ; and Ted Bender ; members of The Christopher M. Barnett Family Foundation: Julie Barnett , Kaitlyn Mulvey , Madison Mulvey , and Kennedy Mulvey ; and Dan Unumb of the Autism Legal Resource Center. "Unless we can win and hold government, then we can't enhance the freedom, prosperity and security of Victorians or Australians," Mr O'Brien said as he entered Parliament House.. "So we just need to knuckle down, get behind whatever decision is made today and win the next election for Victoria." Opposition financial spokeswoman Jess Wilson announced her candidacy after a deal to become leadership frontrunner Brad Battin's deputy came off the table. "The best way forward to defeat Jacinta Allan and Labor was with a unified leadership ticket," Ms Wilson said. "Unfortunately, it has been made clear to me that a unity ticket is no longer on the table. "Given that and after consulting my colleagues, I've decided to stand to offer them a choice." Mr Battin arrived for the vote flanked by supporters including Sam Groth, while Ms Wilson and Mr Pesutto entered parliament alone. Mr Pesutto entered the opposition party room with deputy David Southwick saying his thoughts were with Victorians experiencing bushfires and the first responders. "We'll deal with these matters in here but the most important thing for us in Victoria is to look out for each other," he said. Mr Crewther's eleventh-hour tilt at the top job came via an email to party members overnight, urging collegues for a "fresh start". "I hope that after today, whoever is chosen as a leader, we all unite behind that person, we all work together, because that's what the Victorians want, they don't want a divided team," he said entering the opposition party room. Mr Pesutto's job had been on shaky ground ever since he lost a defamation case brought against him by former colleague Moira Deeming. A Federal Court judge found the Liberal leader defamed Mrs Deeming by implying she was associated with Nazis who gatecrashed a controversial Melbourne rally she was at and ordered he pay her $315,000 and costs. Then came a shock when former tennis player-turned-politician Mr Groth quit his shadow cabinet post, citing his leader's refusal to stand down after the court loss. A party vote, brought on less than a week later to decide whether Mrs Deeming would be allowed back into the party, split the team down the centre with Mr Pesutto casting the tie-breaking vote to bar her from returning. The Hawthorn MP deemed the matter "resolved" only to propose a January 15 gathering to return the upper house MP to the fold a day later. But that last bid to quell tensions fell flat, with senior MPs Mr Groth, Richard Riordan, James Newbury, Mr Battin and Bridget Vallence signing a petition to meet on Friday to bring the issue to a head. The battle to helm Victoria's opposition comes less than two years before a pivotal state election at which the Labor government - increasingly on the nose with voters - will seek a rare fourth term. NoneLeBron James is going to have to make room for the NFL. Wednesday's doubleheader on Netflix set records as the most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history, with numbers nearly five times more than the NBA. The averaged 24.3 million while averaged 24.1 according to early viewer figures released by Nielsen on Thursday. Nielsen also said there were 65 million U.S. viewers who tuned in for at least one minute of one of the two games. The NBA's five-game slate averaged about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, according to the league and Nielsen. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” While the NBA's Christmas lineup has its best viewer numbers in five years, the NFL has made Christmas one of its tentpole events during the regular season, joining Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving. “The numbers speak for themselves and LeBron can have his own view, and I’m sure more people will look at that because of this," said Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media. "But, you know, we’re focused on the NFL and we’re thrilled with the results this year with the Christmas on Netflix and we’re excited to continue to build that over the next couple of years.” Both NFL games surpassed the previous mark of 23 million for last season’s AFC wild-card game between the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs on Peacock. Viewership for Ravens-Texans peaked with the Beyoncé Bowl. The 20-minute halftime performance averaged over 27 million viewers. The viewer figures include the audience on Netflix, mobile viewership on NFL+ and those who tuned in on CBS stations in Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore and Houston. Global ratings and final U.S. numbers are expected to be available on Tuesday. The NFL's Christmas numbers decreased from last season, but not at the rate that usually happens when something goes from broadcast to streaming. Last year’s three games averaged 28.68 million viewers. The early afternoon contest between the Las Vegas Raiders and Chiefs led the way, averaging 29.48 million on CBS. Once global and Netflix's first-party data is released, both Christmas games should surpass 30 million. The NBA's lineup saw an 84% rise over 2023. One reason for the increase is that all five games were on ABC, compared to two last year. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record. For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting. “Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.” Part of that new package of television deals that the NBA is entering into next season also increases the number of regular season games broadcast on television from 15 to 75. Trump chooses Pam Bondi for attorney general pick after Gaetz withdraws

TORONTO: Wall Street stocks, led by S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, ended higher on Tuesday, as technology stocks rebounded, while investors digested President-elect Donald Trump's tariff pledges on top trade partners and the latest minutes from the Federal Reserve. US short-term interest-rate futures pared earlier losses after the Fed's latest minutes showed officials appeared divided over how much further they may need to cut interest rates. The minutes of the Nov. 6-7 meeting also showed the group agreed this was a moment to avoid giving much concrete guidance about how US monetary policy is likely to evolve in the weeks ahead. "The minutes did nothing to alter my view that the policy rate is going to be adjusted lower next week and will continue to do so through the next calendar year," said Jamie Cox, managing partner for Harris Financial Group. Other analysts were more cautious. Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist for Capital Economics, noted that he still expects another 25 basis-point cut, but cautioned such decisions are data-dependent and therefore November’s employment and inflation data will be pivotal In a development overnight, Trump said he would impose a 25% conditional tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports that could violate a free-trade deal he negotiated during his previous term. He also outlined "an additional 10% tariff, above any additional tariffs" on imports from China, raising the risk of trade wars. Automakers Ford and General Motors both dropped on the news as they have highly integrated supply chains across Mexico, the US and Canada. GM shares plunged nearly 9%. "The concern is that some products are going to become more costly and that will mean revenue for those companies that are possibly manufacturing those goods overseas is going to decline," said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth. "It's a lot of back-and-forth right now because investors are trying to position themselves for January and the days after and they're not really sure." The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 123.74 points, or 0.28%, to 44,860.31, the S&P 500 gained 34.26 points, or 0.57%, to 6,021.63 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 119.46 points, or 0.63%, to 19,174.30. Gains in megacaps such as Microsoft and Apple boosted the information technology sector and the tech-heavy Nasdaq. Microsoft shares rose a little over 2%. Wells Fargo rose 0.6%, standing out among sluggish banking stocks, after Reuters reported, citing sources, that the bank is in the last stages of a process to pass regulatory tests to lift a US$1.95 trillion asset cap next year after fixing problems from its scandal over fake accounts. The blue-chip Dow was weighed down by declines in Amgen , which slid about 4.8% after its experimental obesity drug fell short of expectations. The S&P 500 touched a record high on Monday and logged its sixth-straight session of gains, while the Russell 2000 also scaled an all-time high after three years. On the day, the small-cap index fell 0.7%. Among others, Eli Lilly rose 4.6% after US President Joe Biden proposed expanding Medicare and Medicaid coverage for anti-obesity drugs. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.57-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 358 new highs and 52 new lows on the NYSE. The S&P 500 posted 63 new 52-week highs and 3 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 124 new highs and 91 new lows. — ReutersIndia's former prime minister Manmohan Singh, architect of economic reforms, dies at 92The long sports-filled Thanksgiving weekend is a time when many Americans enjoy gathering with friends and family for good food, good company and hopefully not too much political conversation. A look at the 10 winningest NFL coaches Who rules the sidelines? A look at the 10 winningest NFL coaches Before the 2023 National Football League season started, it seemed inevitable that Bill Belichick would end his career as the winningest head coach in league history. He had won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and 298 regular-season games, plus 31 playoff games, across his career. Then the 2023 season happened. Belichick's Patriots finished 4-13, the franchise's worst record since 1992. At the end of the year, Belichick and New England owner Robert Kraft agreed to part ways. And now, during the 2024 season, Belichick is on the sideline. He's 26 wins from the #1 spot, a mark he'd reach in little more than two seasons if he maintained his .647 career winning percentage. Will he ascend the summit? It's hard to tell. Belichick would be 73 if he graced the sidelines next season—meaning he'd need to coach until at least 75 to break the all-time mark. Only one other NFL coach has ever helmed a team at age 73: Romeo Crennel in 2020 for the Houston Texans. With Belichick's pursuit of history stalled, it's worth glancing at the legends who have reached the pinnacle of coaching success. Who else stands among the 10 winningest coaches in NFL history? Stacker ranked the coaches with the most all-time regular-season wins using data from Pro Football Reference . These coaches have combined for 36 league championships, which represents 31.6% of all championships won throughout the history of pro football. To learn who made the list, keep reading. Dan Reeves - Seasons coached: 23 - Years active: 1981-2003 - Record: 190-165-2 - Winning percentage: .535 - Championships: 0 Dan Reeves reached the Super Bowl four times—thrice with the Denver Broncos and once with the Atlanta Falcons—but never won the NFL's crown jewel. Still, he racked up nearly 200 wins across his 23-year career, including a stint in charge of the New York Giants, with whom he won Coach of the Year in 1993. In all his tenures, he quickly built contenders—the three clubs he coached were a combined 17-31 the year before Reeves joined and 28-20 in his first year. However, his career ended on a sour note as he was fired from a 3-10 Falcons team after Week 14 in 2003. #9. Chuck Noll - Seasons coached: 23 - Years active: 1969-91 - Record: 193-148-1 - Winning percentage: .566 - Championships: 4 Chuck Noll's Pittsburgh Steelers were synonymous with success in the 1970s. Behind his defense, known as the Steel Curtain, and offensive stars, including Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, and Lynn Swann, Noll led the squad to four Super Bowl victories from 1974 to 1979. Noll's Steelers remain the lone team to win four Super Bowls in six years, though Andy Reid and Kansas City could equal that mark if they win the Lombardi Trophy this season. Noll was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, two years after retiring. His legacy of coaching success has carried on in Pittsburgh—the club has had only two coaches (Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin) since Noll retired. #8. Marty Schottenheimer - Seasons coached: 21 - Years active: 1984-98, 2001-06 - Record: 200-126-1 - Winning percentage: .613 - Championships: 0 As head coach of Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington, and San Diego, Marty Schottenheimer proved a successful leader during the regular season. Notably, he was named Coach of the Year after turning around his 4-12 Chargers team to a 12-4 record in 2004. His teams, however, struggled during the playoffs. Schottheimer went 5-13 in the postseason, and he never made it past the conference championship round. As such, the Pennsylvania-born skipper is the winningest NFL coach never to win a league championship. #7. Paul Brown - Seasons coached: 25 - Years active: 1946-62, '68-75 - Record: 213-104-9 - Winning percentage: .672 - Championships: 7 The only coach on this list to pilot a college team, Paul Brown, reached the pro ranks after a three-year stint at Ohio State and two years with the Navy during World War II. He guided the Cleveland Browns—named after Brown, their first coach—to four straight titles in the fledgling All-America Football Conference. After the league folded, the ballclub moved to the NFL in 1950, and Cleveland continued its winning ways, with Brown leading the team to championships in '50, '54, and '55. He was fired in 1963 but returned in 1968 as the co-founder and coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. His other notable accomplishments include helping to invent the face mask and breaking pro football's color barrier . #6. Curly Lambeau - Seasons coached: 33 - Years active: 1921-53 - Record: 226-132-22 - Winning percentage: .631 - Championships: 6 An early stalwart of the NFL, Curly Lambeau spent 29 years helming the Green Bay Packers before wrapping up his coaching career with two-year stints with the Chicago Cardinals and Washington. His Packers won titles across three decades, including the league's first three-peat from 1929-31. Notably, he experienced only one losing season during his first 27 years with Green Bay, cementing his legacy of consistent success. Born in Green Bay, Lambeau co-founded the Packers and played halfback on the team from 1919-29. He was elected to the Hall of Fame as a coach and owner in 1963, two years before his death. The Cowboys were especially dominant in the 1970s when they made five Super Bowls and won the big game twice. Landry was known for coaching strong all-around squads and a unit that earned the nickname the "Doomsday Defense." Between 1966 and 1985, Landry and his Cowboys enjoyed 20 straight seasons with a winning record. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1990. #2. George Halas - Seasons coached: 40 - Years active: 1920-29, '33-42, '46-55, '58-67 - Record: 318-148-31 - Winning percentage: .682 - Championships: 6 George Halas was the founder and longtime owner of the Chicago Bears and coached the team across four separate stints. Global stocks mostly pushed higher on Tuesday in thin Christmas Eve trade, as investors waited to see if a so-called Santa Claus rally would sweep the market. "Santa Claus comes tonight, but if stock market participants are lucky he will start sprinkling some gifts today, which marks the official start to the 'Santa Claus rally' period," said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare. US stock markets have traditionally fared well in the last five trading days of the year and the first two in the new year, with experts advancing a number of possible reasons as to why -- including the festive holiday mood and purchasing ahead of the end of the tax year. Wall Street opened modestly higher on the first day of this seven-day stretch and picked up speed as the session progressed. The S&P 500 finished up 1.1 percent. While gains were broad-based, some of the biggest positive moves came from tech heavyweights like Facebook parent Meta, Netflix and Amazon, all of which won more than one percent. "There's a pretty fair amount of enthusiasm for momentum" stocks, said Jack Ablin, of Cresset Capital, who also noted that low trading volumes amplified the trend. In Europe, Paris's CAC 40 closed higher in a pre-holiday short session while Frankfurt was closed all day. London also closed in the green, despite a week clouded by lackluster economic data that is "stoking concerns about the UK's slowing momentum heading into the new year," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. Hong Kong and Shanghai stock markets closed up over one percent, as China announced fresh fiscal measures to boost its ailing economy. On Tuesday, state media reported that China will raise its deficit in order to boost spending next year, as the world's second-largest economy battles sluggish domestic consumption, a property crisis and soaring government debt. Among individual companies, Honda shares closed more than 12 percent higher after the Japanese auto giant announced a buyback of up to 1.1 trillion yen ($7 billion), as it enters merger talks with struggling rival Nissan. The talks between Honda and Nissan could create the world's third-largest automaker, expanding development of EVs and self-driving tech. Honda's CEO insisted it was not a bailout for Nissan, which announced thousands of job cuts last month and reported a 93 percent plunge in first-half net profit. Police issue tips to bank users against ATM fraudstersWASHINGTON — Nearly 100 former senior U.S. diplomats and intelligence and national security officials have urged Senate leaders to schedule closed-door hearings to allow for a full review of the government’s files on former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Donald Trump’s pick to be national intelligence director. The former officials, who served in both Democratic and Republican administrations, said they were “alarmed” by the choice of Gabbard to oversee all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies. They said her past actions “call into question her ability to deliver unbiased intelligence briefings to the President, Congress, and to the entire national security apparatus.” A spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team on Thursday denounced the appeal as an “unfounded” and “partisan” attack. Avril Haines, the current director of national intelligence, when asked Thursday whether intelligence sharing with allies could be in jeopardy under the next administration, cited the importance of those relationships and noted the strong bipartisan support for them in Congress. The question, at a Council on Foreign Relations talk, focused on the especially close intelligence sharing among the Five Eyes — the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It did not mention Gabbard by name. “It is hard for me to believe that anybody coming in wouldn’t want to maintain those relationships,” Haines said. “So I wouldn’t think of them as being in significant risk,” she added. “I certainly hope that will continue.” Among those who signed the letter to Senate leaders were former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, former NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, former national security adviser Anthony Lake, and numerous retired ambassadors and high-ranking military officers. They wrote to current Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and incoming Republican Majority Leader John Thune on Wednesday to urge the closed briefings as part of the Senate’s review of Trump’s top appointments. They requested that Senate committees “consider in closed sessions all information available to the U.S. government when considering Ms. Gabbard’s qualifications to manage our country’s intelligence agencies, and more importantly, the protection of our intelligence sources and methods.” The letter singles out Gabbard’s 2017 meetings in Syria with President Bashar Assad, who is supported by Russian, Iranian and Iranian-allied forces in a now 13-year war against Syrian opposition forces seeking his overthrow. The U.S., which cut relations with Assad’s government and imposed sanctions over his conduct of the war, maintains about 900 troops in opposition-controlled northeast Syria, saying they are needed to block a resurgence of extremist groups. Gabbard, a Democratic member of Congress from Hawaii at the time of her Syria trip, drew heavy criticism for her meetings with a U.S. adversary and brutal leader. As the letter notes, her statements on the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine have aligned with Russian talking points, diverging from U.S. positions and policy. Gabbard throughout her political career has urged the U.S. to limit military engagement abroad other than combatting Islamic extremist groups. She has defended the Syria trip by saying it is necessary to engage with U.S. enemies. In postings on social media earlier this year she confirmed that the U.S. had for a time placed her “on a secret terror watch list” as a “potential domestic terror threat.” She blamed political retaliation. Neither she nor U.S. authorities have publicly detailed the circumstances involved. Alexa Henning, a spokesperson for Gabbard with the Trump team, called the letter sent to the Senate leaders “a perfect example” of why Trump chose Gabbard for this position. “These unfounded attacks are from the same geniuses who have blood on their hands from decades of faulty ‘intelligence,’” and use classified government information as a “partisan weapon to smear and imply things about their political enemy,” Henning said. A spokesperson for Thune did not immediately respond to questions about the request.Memphis 87, No. 16 Mississippi 70

The victory sent Southend ninth in the Regional One South East standings. And Ward was delighted with how Saxons dug deep in tough conditions to end a six match losing streak. “It was a brilliant performance and one the players should be very proud of,” said Ward. “It was atrocious conditions and we played into the wind in the first half but the first quarter was some of the best attacking we’ve played all season. “We really enforced our game onto them which was pleasing. We built the scoreboard up and went in 15-7 ahead.” But Southend were unable to make the most of their pressure in the second half. “We were really buoyant going into the second half and wanted to make sure we were playing in the right areas first and foremost,” explained Ward. “We wanted to apply pressure throughout the half and we got the field position but we lacked a bit of patience which was slightly frustrating. “But in a game where it meant so much to both teams to come out on top winning by eight meant they came away with nothing which was important for us.” And Ward was thrilled with the spirit on show. “I’m immensely proud of the playing group and that extends to the Priors as we all train together,” said Ward. “We came into the game on the back of a few losses but we had the belief and trust in how we wanted to play. “We were confident that we were close to clicking too. “Did we click on Saturday? No but we put in a tough, workmanlike performance which saw the boys get exactly what they deserved.” However, Southend will now be turning their attentions towards hosting seventh placed Shelford at Warners Bridge this weekend. “They’re very physical games with Shelford,” said Ward. “They’ve got threats throughout their team and they’re quick to adapt too. “They notoriously have a big pack which suits it when it’s heavy and wet but they also have some very dangerous runners in the backs. “Regardless of what the weather is like, and hopefully it’s nothing like Saturday, there will be threats coming our way.” And Ward is calling for another strong defensive showing from his side. “We’ve got to take our defensive shift from Saturday into this week,” said Ward. “We didn’t get enough points from the time we spent in the red zone on Saturday so we’ve got some things to look at and we’ll look to back it up with another good performance at home this week.”Stanford, Maxime Raynaud too much for Cal as Cardinal win on roadLABOUR’S big reset put Sir Keir Starmer firmly back in his comfort zone – campaigning. Campaigning is the only time Starmer reveals flashes of inspiration. Campaigning is what he is good at. Campaigning is what he does best. Actually running the country — not so much. Labour’s landslide was built on two false assumptions. One — that Labour couldn’t possibly be worse than the last lot. READ MORE TONY PARSONS And two — that Starmer’s Labour Government would be some kind of updated New Labour, an aspirational pro-business party with a social conscience. How stark raving bonkers both of those expectations seem today. What nobody saw coming was that it would all fall apart so quickly. At a time when Labour — only in office for a shade over five months — should still be enjoying a honeymoon with the British public, it feels like we are already in the divorce courts . Most read in The Sun Despair and discontent are everywhere. Pensioners, farmers, big business , small business — all have been shafted by these old-school socialists who pretended to be something very different. Only the public-sector unions, Labour’s paymasters , are happy after receiving inflation-busting pay rises. There is disgust too, not least for the blatant lies told by Labour to not increase taxes on “working people” — as though anyone who runs a business or employs others is not a “working person”. Growth? With their loathing of the private sector, Labour are already wrecking our economy. Nobody in Starmer’s cabinet ever ran, let alone started, their own business. The only growth you will see with this lot will be David Lammy’s waistline. No wonder Starmer wants to start again! Keir’s relaunch, reboot or reset was most significant for what it left out. Among all of Thursday’s blah-blah-blah about new milestones and millstones, there was not a peep about controlling immigration , taming the benefits bill or staving off World War Three by increasing defence spending. Credit where it could conceivably be due — if Labour build 1.5million homes and slash NHS waiting times , then they will deserve to have us weeping grateful tears. But Keir’s comeback is like the usual “jam tomorrow” promises of the campaign trail. On the same day that Starmer attempted to get his Government restarted by pulling out the plug and sticking it back in, I had a dinner with a man who runs a large company, and who has already started making redundancies as a direct result of Labour’s National Insurance hike on employers . It is not just Starmer. All Labour’s senior figures look allergic to high office. Did it really never occur to Chancellor Rachel Reeves — who claims to have “broken one of the last glass ceilings”, as though three female Tory Prime Ministers never existed — that her lies about never raising taxes on “working people” was as dodgy as her doctored CV? Totally flabbergasted Did it never occur to Foreign Secretary David Lammy , when he was calling Donald Trump names on Twitter , that he may one day have to deal with an American administration run by a President called Trump? Did it really never occur to pink-haired Transport Secretary Louise Haigh that her fraud conviction would inevitably be revealed? It is almost as if Labour are totally flabbergasted to find themselves actually in power . And it is painfully obvious that being in Government does not suit them. No wonder start-again Starmer looks wistful for the easy life of opposition. But Keir’s not on the campaign trail now. He’s on the road to nowhere. But on the set of the Last Christmas video, they had the real thing. There is such an air of euphoric jollity in the video for Last Christmas because they were all half-cut. “We were having great fun but there were casualties, of which I was one,” recalls Andrew. “I’d laughed so much at the dinner table that my eyes had swollen up and I was unfilmable.” Drinking far too much at this time of year? Sweet FA for LGBTQ SPORT can change minds. But meaningless virtue-signalling will always change nothing. This week, football’s addiction to empty gestures hit the buffers. Sam Morsy , Ipswich captain and a practising Muslim, refused to wear a rainbow armband to show the FA’s “support” for the LGBTQ community. Marc Guehi , skipper at Crystal Palace and a committed Christian, wore the multi-coloured armband but wrote “I Love Jesus” on it. I suggest that the religious beliefs of these players are just as valid as the FA’s supposed support for the gay community. Football DOES sometimes stand up for gay rights. Aaron Ramsdale , at Southampton and his previous club Arsenal , has talked movingly about his brother, Oliver, who is gay and has lived in an “open and authentic way” since school. “I’m so proud to say he’s my brother,” Aaron has written. “I want this game I love to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone. “I want my brother Ollie – or anyone of any sexuality, race or religion – to come to games without having to fear abuse.” Unlike the compulsory wearing of rainbow laces, Aaron Ramsdale talking about his brother actually means something. And it might actually change some hearts and minds. VANCOUVER - Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem says the central bank is preparing for a future that looks more uncertain and more prone to shocks. In a speech to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, he said Monday structural changes are underway in the world including demographic shifts, technological changes, decarbonization and a move away from globalization. “We need to use the pandemic experience to prepare for future crises,” Macklem said in a prepared text of his speech. To that end, Macklem says the Bank of Canada is working to learn what it can from how the economy reacted to the pandemic and in its aftermath. The Bank of Canada is conducting a review of the policy actions it took to restore financial stability and support the economy during the pandemic that it plans to publish along with an assessment of an independent panel of experts. Macklem said the spike in inflation in 2022 was a reminder that even though inflation was relatively low and stable for 30 years leading up to the pandemic, central banks cannot take public trust for granted. “All of a sudden, people couldn’t afford the things they need. And while inflation is low once again, many prices are still a lot higher than they were before the pandemic. So people feel ripped off. And that erodes public trust in our economic system,” he said in his speech. The Bank of Canada has cut its key policy interest rate five times this year including last week when it reduced the benchmark by a half a percentage point to 3.25 per cent. Macklem says the bank will be evaluating the need for further reductions in the policy rate one decision at a time and anticipates a more gradual approach to monetary policy if the economy evolves as expected. Statistics Canada reported last month that the annual inflation rate was two per cent in Ontario, hitting the Bank of Canada’s target. The speech by Macklem came ahead of the release of the November inflation report on Tuesday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 16, 2024.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it finalized the rule, which also requires enhanced warnings when front seat belts aren’t fastened. The agency estimates that the new rule will save 50 lives per year and prevent 500 injuries when fully in effect, according to a statement. The new rule will apply to passenger cars, trucks, buses except for school buses, and multipurpose vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds. Before the rule, seat belt warnings were required only for the driver’s seat. Under the new rule, outboard front-seat passengers also must get a warning if they don’t fasten their belts. Front-center seats will not get a warning because NHTSA found that it wouldn’t be cost effective. The agency said most vehicles already have warnings for the outboard passenger seats. The rule also lengthens the duration of audio and visual warnings for the driver’s seat. The front-seat rules are effective starting Sept. 1 of 2026. Rear passengers consistently use seat belts at a lower rate than front passengers, the agency says. In 2022, front belt use was just under 92%, while rear use dropped to about 82%. About half of automobile passengers who died in crashes two years ago weren’t wearing belts, according to NHTSA data. The seat belt rule is the second significant regulation to come from NHTSA in the past two months. In November the agency bolstered its Safety advocates want the Department of Transportation, which includes NHTSA, to finish several more rules before the end of the Biden administration, because President-elect Donald Trump has said he’s against new government regulations. AP Sports SummaryBrief at 6:05 p.m. ESTThe death of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday led to a swift outpouring of support and condolences from notable figures in both political parties. President Joe Biden and president-elect Donald Trump issued statements Sunday, and both said Carter was a president who worked to better Americans’ lives. “He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism,” Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement. “We will always cherish seeing him and Rosalynn together. The love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism.” Trump said Carter dealt with “enormous responsibility” that only other presidents could relate to. “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social. “For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.” ‘One of my heroes’ Fellow Georgia politicians, including Democratic Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, issued passionate statements following the news Sunday. Warnock referred to the Plains native as “one of my heroes.” “His leadership was driven by love, his life’s project grounded in compassion and a commitment to human dignity,” Warnock said. “For those of us who have the privilege of representing our communities in elected office, Jimmy Carter is a shining example of what it means to make your faith come alive through the noble work of public service.” Ossoff said Carter’s work “changed the lives of many across our state, our country, and around the world.” “The State of Georgia and the United States are better places because of President Jimmy Carter,” Ossoff said. Former Sen. Sam Nunn, from Georgia, lauded Carter for his “spine of steel and intrepid focus and determination.” “Colin Powell and I had front row seats to these unique Carter traits in Haiti in 1994,” he said in a statement. “I will never forget nervously watching President Carter negotiate every word of the Haitian military’s peaceful turnover of authority, while the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne prepared to land on the roof of the military headquarters, where we were finishing the agreement.” Brad Raffensperger, Georgia secretary of state, said Carter devoted his life to serving the U.S. “As a true servant-leader, he devoted his post-presidency to spreading the very best of American ideals across the globe,” Raffensperger said in a statement Sunday. “His commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights has left an indelible mark on the world.” The Democratic Party of Georgia’s Chair, Rep. Nikema Williams, said Carter “leaves one of the greatest legacies of humanitarianism in history.” “My husband Leslie and I named our son Carter after our 39th president because he showed us that ordinary Georgians can do extraordinary things,” Williams said. “He was one of the greatest public servants of our time – and he was also a peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia. From a southwest Georgia town of a few hundred people to the Oval Office, President Carter went from sowing crops to sowing the seeds of peace around the world.” Georgia Lt. Gov. Ines Owens said Carter “represented small towns like Plains, Georgia and never forgot where he and his family came from.” Georgia’s Carter had ‘calm spirit and deep faith’ Major national lawmakers outside the Peach State offered their thoughts too, including GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell. McConnell said Carter’s “calm spirit and deep faith seemed “unshakable” during difficulties in his presidency. “President Carter lived a truly American dream,” McConnell said. “A devoutly religious peanut farmer from small-town Georgia volunteered to serve his country in uniform. He found himself manning cutting-edge submarines hundreds of feet beneath the ocean. He returned home and saved the family farm before feeling drawn to a different sort of public service. And less than 15 years after his first campaign for the state Senate, his fellow Americans elected him leader of the free world.” Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, called Carter “one of our most humble and devoted public servants.” “President Carter’s faith in the American people and his belief in the power of kindness and humility leave a strong legacy,” Schumer said. “He taught us that the strength of a leader lies not in rhetoric but in action, not in personal gain but in service to others.” ©2024 The Charlotte Observer. The new, 12-team College Football Playoff brings with it a promise to be bigger, more exciting, more lucrative. Perfect or 100% fair? Well, nobody ever believed that. The first expanded playoff bracket unveiled Sunday left a presumably deserving Alabama team on the sideline in favor of an SMU squad that finished with a better record after playing a schedule that was not as difficult. It ranked undefeated Oregon first but set up a possible rematch against Ohio State, the team that came closest to beating the Ducks this year. It treated underdog Boise State like a favorite and banged-up Georgia like a world beater at No. 2. It gave Ohio State home-field advantage against Tennessee for reasons it would take a supercomputer to figure out. It gave the sport the multiweek tournament it has longed for, but also ensured there will be plenty to grouse about between now and when the trophy is handed out on Jan. 20 after what will easily be the longest college football season in history. All of it, thankfully, will be sorted out on the field starting with first-round games on campuses Dec. 20 and 21, then over three succeeding rounds that will wind their way through traditional bowl sites. Maybe Oregon coach Dan Lanning, whose undefeated Ducks are the favorite to win it all, put it best when he offered: "Winning a national championship is not supposed to be easy.” Neither, it turns out, is figuring out who should play for it. The Big Ten will lead the way with four teams in the tournament, followed by the SEC with three and the ACC with two. The lasting memory from the inaugural bracket will involve the decision that handed the ACC that second bid. Alabama of the SEC didn't play Saturday. SMU of the ACC did. The Mustangs fell behind by three touchdowns to Clemson before coming back to tie. But they ultimately lost 34-31 on a 56-yard field goal as time expired. “We were on pins and needles,” SMU coach Rhett Lashley said. “Until we saw the name ‘SMU’ up there, we were hanging on the edge. We're really, really happy and thankful to the committee for rewarding our guys for their total body of work." The Mustangs only had two losses, compared to three for the Crimson Tide. Even though SMU's schedule wasn't nearly as tough, the committee was impressed by the way the Mustangs came back against Clemson. “We just felt, in this particular case, SMU had the nod above Alabama,” said Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, the chairman of the selection committee. “But it’s no disrespect to Alabama’s strength of schedule. We looked at the entire body of work for both teams.” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne was gracious, up to a point. “Disappointed with the outcome and felt we were one of the 12 best teams in the country,” he said on social media. He acknowledged — despite all of Alabama’s losses coming against conference opponents this season — that the Tide’s push to schedule more games against teams from other major conferences in order to improve its strength of schedule did not pay off this time. “That is not good for college football," Byrne said. Georgia, the SEC champion, was seeded second; Boise State, the Mountain West champion, earned the third seed; and Big 12 titlist Arizona State got the fourth seed and the fourth and final first-round bye. All will play in quarterfinals at bowl games on Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Clemson stole a bid and the 12th seed with its crazy win over SMU, the result that ultimately cost Alabama a spot in the field. The Tigers moved to No. 16 in the rankings, but got in as the fifth-best conference winner. The conference commissioners' idea to give conference champions preferable treatment in this first iteration of the 12-team playoff could be up for reconsideration after this season. The committee actually ranked Boise State, the Mountain West Champion, at No. 9 and Big 12 champion Arizona State at No. 12, but both get to skip the first round. Another CFP guideline: There’s no reseeding of teams after each round, which means no break for Oregon. The top-seeded Ducks will face the winner of Tennessee-Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. In a time when many households face rising costs, this initiative offers a timely financial boost. The “Fairer Share Payment" is a £100 bonus designed to share profits with eligible members. The payments will be made between June 13 and June 28, 2024, but only to those who meet specific criteria. To qualify, members must hold both a current account and either savings or a mortgage with Nationwide. Current account eligibility depends on the type of account and its activity as of March 31, 2024. For accounts such as FlexPlus, the monthly fee must have been paid. FlexOne, FlexStudent, or FlexGraduate account holders must have made or received at least one payment during March, unless the account was switched between January and March 2024. Other current accounts, including FlexAccount, FlexDirect, or FlexBasic, require members to meet one of two conditions during at least two months of the first quarter of 2024: either receiving £500 into the account or making two payments, or completing 10 or more transactions. Savings accounts also play a role in eligibility. Members must have held at least £100 in personal savings accounts or cash ISAs at the end of any day in March 2024. However, investments such as stocks and shares or accounts held in another person’s name are excluded. Mortgage holders can qualify if they owed at least £100 on a residential mortgage with Nationwide as of March 31. Mortgages with subsidiaries like The Mortgage Works or those applied for but not completed by this date are not eligible. Nationwide has clarified that eligibility is assessed individually, even for joint accounts. This means both account holders can qualify for the bonus if they meet the criteria. However, accounts managed under arrangements such as power of attorney will count toward the beneficiary’s eligibility, not the manager’s. The payment will be deposited directly into a qualifying current account. If members hold multiple current accounts, the bank will select one, prioritizing sole-name accounts where possible. The transaction will appear on statements as “Nationwide Fairer Share Payment.” Nationwide acknowledged the potential for errors and promised to rectify any mistakes. A spokesperson explained: “If we find you were wrongly excluded, we will make the payment. However, we cannot guarantee how quickly new account applications are processed, and delays may affect eligibility.” This initiative is part of Nationwide’s commitment to sharing profits with its members. The spokesperson added: “As a modern mutual, we’re able to share some of our profits with members who bank and save or bank and borrow with us.”The internet is rife with fake reviews. SHREVEPORT, La. - We officially have an announcement on what teams will be coming to Shreveport for the 2024 Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl. This year's matchup features teams from the Sun Belt and American Conference. It's Marshall vs. Army West Point. Both teams won their conference championship this year. This will be the first year since the inaugural year of the Independence Bowl, which was in 1976, that two teams who won their conference will face off against each other. "It's extremely important. It calls attention to our bowl. It gives our bowl the status of having a conference champion. That's very significant, and to be able to put two of them together is very exciting," said Independence Bowl Chair Claire Rebouche. The Marshall Thundering Herd vs. the Army Black Knights will kick off at 8:15 on December 28.Wait, Tony Armstrong ate what? [+] the Senate Subcommittee on Privacy. OpenAI's transformation from a nonprofit research laboratory established in 2015 to a pioneering force in artificial intelligence presents a fascinating case study in technological evolution, intellectual property, and organizational governance. The creator of ChatGPT has experienced a year of unprecedented challenges and changes, offering valuable insights into the broader AI industry's development. The lessons learned from OpenAI's challenges and adaptations in 2024 will likely influence the interplay amongst intellectual property, organizational model, and AI governance for years to come. The Current Challenges and Complexities The legal arena has become increasingly complex for OpenAI in 2024. The New York Times initiated significant legal action, filing a lawsuit against both OpenAI and Microsoft. The suit alleges that millions of Times articles were used without authorization in training AI models, raising fundamental questions about intellectual property rights in the digital age. This case has become a bellwether for how traditional copyright law applies to AI development. Others like The Intercept, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and Denver Post, have also filed lawsuits against OpenAI for copyright infringement. The dispute extends beyond media organizations. Elon Musk's legal challenge against OpenAI has added another dimension to the company's legal battles. The lawsuit centers on OpenAI's transition from its original nonprofit structure, with Musk arguing this shift contradicts the organization's founding principles. OpenAI has defended its position , suggesting that Musk's actions might be influenced by his involvement in competing AI ventures, highlighting the increasingly competitive nature of the AI sector. The year has also marked a period of significant internal change at OpenAI. The company has experienced several high-profile departures , including co-founder Ilya Sutskever and chief technology officer Mira Murati and the controversy continues with other key resignations such as Greg Brockman (Co-Founder), John Schulman (Co-Founders), Bob McGrew (Chief Research Officer), Jan Leike (Engineer in AI Safety), and Barret Zoph (VP of Research). The departures have forced a broader discussions within the organization about its strategic direction and commitment to AI safety principles. In response to these concerns, OpenAI established a dedicated safety and security committee Industry-Wide Implications and Future Challenges OpenAI's experiences in 2024 illuminate several critical challenges facing the AI industry as a whole. Google’s Gmail Upgrade—Why You Need A New Email Address In 2025 Urgent New Gmail Security Warning For Billions As Attacks Continue FinCEN Extends Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Reporting Deadline The intersection of AI training and intellectual property rights has emerged as a central issue. The industry must navigate existing copyright frameworks while potentially helping to shape new regulations that balance innovation with rights protection. This includes addressing questions about fair use, compensation for content creators, and the establishment of clear guidelines for data usage in AI training. It has also created tension between profit-driven innovation and public benefit continues to challenge AI organizations. OpenAI's evolution from a nonprofit to a capped-profit model represents one approach to this balance, but questions persist about the optimal structure for AI companies serving both commercial and social interests. The implementation of effective safety measures while maintaining technological momentum remains a crucial challenge. The dissolution and subsequent reformation of safety teams at OpenAI demonstrates the ongoing debate about how best to approach AI safety governance. Additionally, the regulatory environment for AI continues to evolve. President-elect Trump's appointment of an AI czar represents one approach to government oversight, though the effectiveness of such measures remains to be seen. The industry faces the challenge of working with regulators to create frameworks that promote innovation while protecting public interests. Looking Forward: The Path Ahead As AI technology continues its rapid advancement, the need for guardrails, governance, government, and frameworks become increasingly critical, while answering key questions: The answers to these questions will begin to shape the future of not just OpenAI, but the entire AI industry. The company's experience serves as a valuable case study in navigating the complex intersection of technology, ethics, and business in the AI era. The pace of AI development continues to accelerate, making it essential for stakeholders across industry, government, and academia to collaborate effectively. The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on four Pakistani entities for their alleged involvement in advancing the country's long-range missile programme. "In light of the continuing proliferation threat of Pakistan's long-range missile development, the United States is designating four entities for sanctions pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13382, which targets proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery," read a statement issued by the State Department.? The move is the latest aimed at targeting Pakistan's long-range missile programme. Earlier, the US listed Chinese and Belarusian entities on charges of supplying equipment and material for Pakistan's long-range missile program. Pakistan at the time dismissed the allegations and questioned the double standards of the US. The entities that the US listed includes Pakistan's National Development Complex. The US claims Pakistan National Development Complex is responsible for Pakistan's ballistic missile program and has worked to acquire items to advance Pakistan's long-range ballistic missile program. The State Department alleged the National Development Complex (NDC), located in Islamabad, Pakistan, has worked to acquire items in furtherance of Pakistan's long-range ballistic missile program - including special vehicle chassis intended to be used as launch support equipment for ballistic missiles and missile testing equipment. "The United States assesses NDC is responsible for Pakistan's development of ballistic missiles, including the SHAHEEN-series ballistic missiles," it claimed. Other entities that were sanctioned are Affiliates International, Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, and Rockside Enterprise. These entities were accused of supplying equipment and missile?applicable items to Pakistan's ballistic missile program, including its long range-missile program. The State Department said these entities were being designated pursuant to E.O. 13382 Section 1(a)(ii) for having engaged, or attempted to engage, in activities or transactions that have materially contributed to, or pose a risk of materially contributing to, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction or their means of delivery (including missiles capable of delivering such weapons), including any efforts to manufacture, acquire, possess, develop, transport, transfer, or use such items, by Pakistan.? The United States will continue to act against proliferation and associated procurement activities of concern, it added. Pakistan's long-range missile program has remained under the US spotlight for years. Islamabad has resisted the pressure and even attempts by Washington to limit the range of missiles. The latest move by the Biden administration comes just weeks before President-elect Trump takes charge of the White House. Hours after the US move, Pakistan reacted sharply to the move, rejecting the decision. "Pakistan considers the US decision to impose sanctions on NDC and three commercial entities as unfortunate and biased. Pakistan's strategic capabilities are meant to defend its sovereignty and preserve peace and stability in South Asia, " read a statement issued by the Foreign Office. It said the latest installment of sanctions defies the objective of peace and security by aiming to accentuate military asymmetries. Such policies have dangerous implications for strategic stability of our region and beyond. "Pakistan's strategic programme is a sacred trust bestowed by 240 million people upon its leadership. The sanctity of this trust, held in the highest esteem across the entire political spectrum, cannot be compromised," the statement said. "We also regret the imposition of sanctions on private commercial entities. Similar listings of commercial entities in the past were based on mere doubts and suspicion without any evidence whatsoever. While claiming strict adherence to non-proliferation norms, licensing requirement for advanced military technology to other countries have been waived off in the past." It further said such double standards and discriminatory practices not only undermine the credibility of non-proliferation regimes but also endanger regional and international peace and security. Pep Guardiola 's side have all but surrendered their Premier League title given the club are in seventh place with 27 points, 12 fewer than first-placed Liverpool despite having played a game more than the Reds. The champions were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, their ninth loss in their last 12 matches in all competitions. Phil Foden might have found the back of the net late on but City did not appear to be particularly threatening, with striker Erling Haaland looking an isolated figure up front. The Daily Mail claim that City tried to strengthen their attack in the summer, reporting that a significant offer was made to Rodrygo but that he ultimately turned it down despite seriously contemplating a switch to England. Much has been made of City's defensive weaknesses, and while the champions do look vulnerable during counter-attacks, Guardiola's side have only scored 14 goals in their past 12 fixtures in all competitions. Haaland's form has been alarming considering the Norwegian has only netted three times in his last 12 Premier League games, whereas he had scored 10 goals in his first five league games of 2024-25. Foden's goal against Villa was his first for City in the Premier League this season and just his fourth in 24 games for club and country. Rodrygo's Real Madrid have not been particularly strong this campaign, and he has often had to play on the right side of attack despite preferring to operate on the left, but has still managed to score five goals and produce three assists in 977 La Liga minutes. While Rodrygo would not have helped solve City's defensive issues, he would have undoubtedly offered the team a different option in the forward line, especially as his versatility and instinct in front of goal could have helped alleviate the burden on the likes Haaland. Guardiola has himself indicated that without the return of players such as Rodri from injury, and without reinforcements in January, City's poor form is likely to continue . Kevin De Bruyne is also out of contract at the end of the season, and there is a real possibility that fans could be seeing the last of the City legend in England. Additionally, other key figures such as Ederson and Kyle Walker have come under significant scrutiny for their poor performances of late, and it would seem that several areas of the squad may have to be addressed in the upcoming transfer windows. The threat of being punished by the Premier League for breaching the division's financial rules is also a cloud that continues to hang over the Citizens. Fans will hope that Rodrygo's reported rejection is an isolated case, and that the club are able to attract several new arrivals across the January and summer transfer windows.

The Government has announced it is doubling funds to support workers and businesses affected by job losses at a giant Tata steel plant. Ministers said an extra £15 million will be made available for supply chain businesses and workers affected by changes at Tata’s Port Talbot site in south Wales. Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens said the move means a fund to support businesses across Wales heavily reliant on Tata steel will be increased to £30 million. She also announced that more businesses will be able to apply for the funds, and the value of individual grants is increasing to up to £250,000 for businesses to invest in equipment, property, technology. The Government said there has been “significant demand” on the existing funding, with almost 40 businesses employing 2,000 people having begun the application process. Grants worth millions of pounds are expected to be released in the new year. The increase in funding is in anticipation of more people leaving Tata in early 2025 through the company’s voluntary redundancy scheme. Ms Stevens said: “This Government is acting decisively to support workers and businesses in Port Talbot. “We are doubling the funding available to businesses and workers and widening access to grants to ensure we support as many people as possible. “In just four months we have announced more than £40 million in investment. We said we would back workers and businesses affected by the transition at Port Talbot and we are doing exactly that. “While this remains a very difficult time for Tata workers, their families and the community, we are determined to support workers and businesses in our Welsh steel industry, whatever happens.”2seventy bio: All In On Abecma Multiple Myeloma Treatment

NEW YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail on Wednesday as he awaits a May sex trafficking trial by a judge who cited evidence showing him to be a serious risk of witness tampering and proof that he has violated regulations in jail. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian made the decision in a written ruling following a bail hearing last week, when lawyers for the hip-hop mogul argued that a $50 million bail package they proposed would be sufficient to ensure Combs doesn’t flee and doesn’t try to intimidate prospective trial witnesses. Two other judges previously had been persuaded by prosecutors’ arguments that the Bad Boy Records founder was a danger to the community if he is not behind bars. Lawyers did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the decision. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees. An indictment alleges that he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. A federal appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan considers his bail request. Prosecutors have insisted that no bail conditions would be sufficient to protect the public and prevent the “I'll Be Missing You” singer from fleeing. They say that even in a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Combs has orchestrated social media campaigns designed to influence prospective jurors and tried to publicly leak materials he thinks can help his case. They say he also has contacted potential witnesses through third parties. Lawyers for Combs say any alleged sexual abuse described in the indictment occurred during consensual relations between adults and that new evidence refutes allegations that Combs used his “power and prestige” to induce female victims into drugged-up, elaborately produced sexual performances with male sex workers known as “Freak Offs.” Larry Neumeister, The Associated PressAustralian Senate begins debate on world-first social media ban for children under 16

Ukrainian girls’ team finds hockey haven at Wickenheiser festivalThe main contributors to the latest contraction included a 1.1% decline in retail. Photo: RNZ By Gyles Beckford of RNZ New Zealand's economy was in a deeper than expected recession in the middle of the year, with widespread contraction across many sectors. Stats NZ data shows gross domestic product, the broad measure of economic growth, fell 1% in the three months ended September, to be 1.5% lower than a year ago. Significant revisions to previous figures resulted in a fall of 1.1% in the June quarter, meeting the definition of technical recession. These were the biggest quarterly falls since late 2021 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns, but excluding those the six monthly fall was the largest since mid-1991. However, previous negative readings for 2022/23 have largely disappeared. Stats NZ said extra data had shown a different performance of the economy. "The data incorporated this year shows stronger growth over the last year, followed by two significant falls in the latest quarters," spokesperson Jason Attewell said. Short, sharp recession The big falls in the June and September quarters were the biggest quarterly drops since late 2021 at the height of the pandemic and lockdowns. But excluding those the six-monthly fall was the largest since mid-1991. The main contributors to the latest contraction were a 2.6% fall in manufacturing, 3.7% in electricity and gas, 2.8% drop in construction and 1.1% decline in retail. The fall in manufacturing in part reflected the energy crunch in mid-winter which forced some businesses to reduce or halt production. The growth spots were agriculture on the back of the strong dairy production, information and technology, and rental and real estate industries. Individual shares of the economy shrank again, by 1.2% during the quarter, the eighth consecutive quarterly fall. The latest GDP reading is expected to be the low point of the recent economic cycle, with falling interest rates expected to give a spark to household spending and business investment. Forecasts are for tepid but positive growth from the end of this year picking up pace in the second half of next year to average 2-3% over the next few years. New Zealand's economic activity was the weakest of all its major trading partners.

It looked like a recipe for disaster. So, when his country's swimmers were being accused of doping earlier this year, one Chinese official cooked up something fast. He blamed it on contaminated noodles. In fact, he argued, it could have been a culinary conspiracy concocted by criminals, whose actions led to the cooking wine used to prepare the noodles being laced with a banned heart drug that found its way into an athlete's system. This theory was spelled out to international anti-doping officials during a meeting and, after weeks of wrangling, finally made it into the thousands of pages of data handed over to the lawyer who investigated the case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who had tested positive for that same drug. The attorney, appointed by the World Anti-Doping Agency, refused to consider that scenario as he sifted through the evidence. In spelling out his reasoning, lawyer Eric Cottier paid heed to the half-baked nature of the theory. “The Investigator considers this scenario, which he has described in the conditional tense, to be possible, no less, no more,” Cottier wrote. Even without the contaminated-noodles theory, Cottier found problems with the way WADA and the Chinese handled the case but ultimately determined WADA had acted reasonably in not appealing China's conclusion that its athletes had been inadvertently contaminated. Critics of the way the China case was handled can't help but wonder if a wider exploration of the noodle theory, details of which were discovered by The Associated Press via notes and emails from after the meeting where it was delivered, might have lent a different flavor to Cottier's conclusions. “There are more story twists to the ways the Chinese explain the TMZ case than a James Bond movie,” said Rob Koehler, the director general of the advocacy group Global Athlete. "And all of it is complete fiction.” In April, reporting from the New York Times and the German broadcaster ARD revealed that the 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for the banned heart medication trimetazidine, also known as TMZ. China's anti-doping agency determined the athletes had been contaminated, and so, did not sanction them. WADA accepted that explanation , did not press the case further, and China was never made to deliver a public notice about the “no-fault findings,” as is often seen in similar cases. The stock explanation for the contamination was that traces of TMZ were found in the kitchen of a hotel where the swimmers were staying. In his 58-page report , Cottier relayed some suspicions about the feasibility of that chain of events — noting that WADA's chief scientist “saw no other solution than to accept it, even if he continued to have doubts about the reality of contamination as described by the Chinese authorities.” But without evidence to support pursuing the case, and with the chance of winning an appeal at almost nil, Cottier determined WADA's “decision not to appeal appears indisputably reasonable.” A mystery remained: How did those traces of TMZ get into the kitchen? Shortly after the doping positives were revealed, the Institute of National Anti-Doping Organizations held a meeting on April 30 where it heard from the leader of China's agency, Li Zhiquan. Li's presentation was mostly filled with the same talking points that have been delivered throughout the saga — that the positive tests resulted from contamination from the kitchen. But he expanded on one way the kitchen might have become contaminated, harkening to another case in China involving a low-level TMZ positive. A pharmaceutical factory, he explained, had used industrial alcohol in the distillation process for producing TMZ. The industrial alcohol laced with the drug “then entered the market through illegal channels,” he said. The alcohol "was re-used by the perpetrators to process and produce cooking wine, which is an important seasoning used locally to make beef noodles,” Li said. “The contaminated beef noodles were consumed by that athlete, resulting in an extremely low concentration of TMZ in the positive sample. "The wrongdoers involved have been brought to justice.” This new information raised eyebrows among the anti-doping leaders listening to Li's report. So much so that over the next month, several emails ensued to make sure the details about the noodles and wine made their way to WADA lawyers, who could then pass it onto Cottier. Eventually, Li did pass on the information to WADA general counsel Ross Wenzel and, just to be sure, one of the anti-doping leaders forwarded it, as well, according to the emails seen by the AP. All this came with Li's request that the noodles story be kept confidential. Turns out, it made it into Cottier's report, though he took the information with a grain of salt. “Indeed, giving it more attention would have required it to be documented, then scientifically verified and validated,” he wrote. Neither Wenzel nor officials at the Chinese anti-doping agency returned messages from AP asking about the noodles conspiracy and the other athlete who Li suggested had been contaminated by them. Meanwhile, 11 of the swimmers who originally tested positive competed at the Paris Games earlier this year in a meet held under the cloud of the Chinese doping case. Though WADA considers the case closed, Koehler and others point to situations like this as one of many reasons that an investigation by someone other than Cottier, who was hired by WADA, is still needed. “It gives the appearance that people are just making things up as they go along on this, and hoping the story just goes away," Koehler said. “Which clearly it has not.” AP Olympics: https://apnews.com/hub/2024-paris-olympic-games

Over the past two days, President-elect Donald Trump has made clear that he has designs for American territorial expansion, declaring that the United States has both security concerns and commercial interests that can best be addressed by bringing the Panama Canal and Greenland under American control or outright ownership. Trump’s tone has had none of the trolling jocularity that surrounded his repeated suggestions in recent weeks that Canada should become America’s “51st state,” including his social media references to the country’s beleaguered prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau.” Instead, while naming a new ambassador to Denmark — which controls Greenland’s foreign and defense affairs — Trump made clear on Sunday that his first-term offer to buy the landmass could, in the coming term, become a deal the Danes cannot refuse. He appears to covet Greenland both for its strategic location at a time when the melting of Arctic ice is opening new commercial and naval competition and for its reserves of rare earth minerals needed for advanced technology. “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World,” Trump wrote on social media, “the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” On Saturday evening, he had accused Panama of price-gouging American ships traversing the canal, and suggested that unless that changed, he would abandon the Jimmy Carter-era treaty that returned all control of the canal zone to Panama. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous,” he wrote, just before an increase in the charges scheduled for Jan. 1. “This complete ‘rip-off’ of our country will immediately stop.” He went on to express worry that the canal could fall into the “wrong hands,” an apparent reference to China, the second-largest user of the canal. A Hong Kong-based firm controls two ports near the canal, but China has no control over the canal itself. Not surprisingly, the government of Greenland immediately rejected Trump’s demands, as it did in 2019, when he first floated the idea. “Greenland is ours,” Prime Minister Mute B. Egede said in a statement. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.” The Danish prime minister’s office was more circumspect, writing in a statement that the government was “looking forward to working with the new administration” and offering no further comment on Trump’s remarks. After Trump brought up the Panama Canal again in a speech on Sunday, Panama’s president, José Raúl Mulino, said in a video that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zones is part of Panama, and it will continue to be.” He added: “Our country’s sovereignty and independence are not negotiable.” But the president-elect’s statements — and the not-so-subtle threats behind them — were another reminder that his version of “America First” is not an isolationist creed. His aggressive interpretation of the phrase evokes the expansionism, or colonialism, of President Theodore Roosevelt, who cemented control of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. And it reflects the instincts of a real estate developer who suddenly has the power of the world’s largest military to back up his negotiating strategy. Trump has often suggested that he does not always see the sovereignty of other nations’ borders as sacrosanct. When Russia invaded Ukraine, his first response was not a condemnation of the blatant land grab, but rather the observation that President Vladimir Putin’s move was an act of “genius.” Even now, as Trump seeks a deal to end the war in Ukraine, he has never said that the country’s borders must be restored, a key demand of the United States and NATO — he has only promised a “deal” to end the fighting. In the cases of Greenland and Panama, both commercial and national security interests are at play. Trump’s desire for Greenland was made explicit in the first term, when a wealthy New York friend of his, Ronald S. Lauder, the New York cosmetics heir, put the idea in his head. In the Trump White House in 2019, the National Security Council was suddenly delving into the details of how the United States would pull off a land acquisition of that size. Trump kept pressing the point with Denmark, which consistently rebuffed him. Trump was not the first president to make the case: Harry S. Truman wanted to buy Greenland after World War II, as part of a Cold War strategy for boxing out Soviet forces. Trump can make a parallel argument, especially as Russia, China and the United States jockey for control of Arctic routes for commercial shipping and naval assets. Arctic experts did not dismiss Trump’s Greenland bid as a joke. “Not that many people are laughing about it now,” said Marc Jacobsen, an associate professor at the Royal Danish Defense College in Denmark who focuses on Arctic security. Jacobsen noted that the reaction in Denmark to Trump’s latest bid had been one of fury (one Danish politician called it “an unusually strange way to be an ally”). But, he said, Greenlanders — who have long sought independence — may seek to use Trump’s interest as an opportunity to further strengthen economic ties with the United States. Since 2009, Greenland has had the right to declare its independence, but the vast territory of about 56,000 people is still heavily dependent on Denmark and has never chosen to pursue that path. Trump’s interest could give Greenland an opening for more U.S. investments, including in tourism or rare earth mining, he said. “Was it crazy when the U.S. acquired Alaska? Was it crazy when the U.S. built the Panama Canal?” asked Sherri Goodman, a former Pentagon official and a senior fellow with the Wilson Center Polar Institute, a Washington-based think tank. Goodman, whose book “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security” centers in part on the Arctic, said the United States did have a strong interest in ensuring that China in particular does not develop a strong presence in Greenland. China’s ambitions in the Arctic have grown, and in 2018 it laid out plans to build infrastructure and develop shipping lanes opened by climate change. Goodman said the United States should continue to prevent China from gaining a foothold in the doorstep to North America, but said Greenlanders must decide their own fate. “We want to have all those territories proximate to our own mainland territory to protect us and also to prevent an adversary from using it to our strategic disadvantage,” Goodman said. “On the other hand, there is international law and international order and sovereignty, and Greenland is still a part of Denmark.” When it comes to Panama, Trump may also hold a distant personal grudge. In 2018, Panamanian police officers ousted the Trump Organization from the Trump International Hotel in Panama City after a protracted legal battle between the president-elect’s family and the majority owner of the property. The Trump name subsequently came down. The company had held a contract to manage the property. David L. Goldwyn, who served at the State Department under Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, noted that Greenland has tremendous undeveloped natural resources, including more than 43 of the 50 so-called critical rare earth elements used to make electric vehicles, wind turbines and other clean technology. “Certainly if Greenland chose to develop these resources, it would provide a significant alternative to China, although it is China’s capacity to process those minerals which gives it its current advantage,” he said. But Goldwyn said that in addition to Denmark’s sovereignty, Trump might find that Greenland’s Indigenous communities do not want mining and resource extraction as much as he does. “It is highly unlikely resource extraction could be forced on an unwilling population,” he said. “A more fruitful path might be to collaborate with the Danish government and Greenland’s population on ways to safely and sustainably develop those resources.” This article originally appeared in The New York Times . © 2024 The New York Times CompanyThe dynamics of the germ cell tumors market are anticipated to change in the coming years owing to the approval of specialized therapies for GCT and anticipated greater patients getting access to treatment across the world. Discover which therapies are expected to grab the major Germ Cell Tumors market share @ Germ Cell Tumors Market Report Germ Cell Tumors Overview Germ cell tumors are a rare type of growth that originates from germ cells, the cells responsible for developing into sperm in males and eggs in females. These tumors can be benign or malignant and often develop in the gonads, but they can also arise in other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, chest, or brain. The exact cause of germ cell tumors is not always clear, but genetic and environmental factors may play a role. Some known risk factors include abnormal development of the gonads, family history of similar conditions, and certain inherited syndromes. Germ cell tumor symptoms depend on the tumor's location and size. Common signs include swelling or a mass in the affected area, abdominal or chest pain, difficulty breathing (in cases of tumors in the chest), or hormonal changes. In some cases, the tumors may cause symptoms such as fatigue or unexplained weight loss. Germ cell tumor diagnosis typically involves a combination of imaging studies, blood tests to measure tumor markers like alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) or beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), and biopsy or surgical removal of the tumor to determine its nature. Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes, with therapies including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of these approaches. Germ Cell Tumors Epidemiology Segmentation The germ cell tumors epidemiology section provides insights into the historical and current germ cell tumors patient pool and forecasted trends for the 7MM. It helps recognize the causes of current and forecasted patient trends by exploring numerous studies and views of key opinion leaders. The germ cell tumors market report proffers epidemiological analysis for the study period 2020–2034 in the 7MM segmented into: Total Incident Cases of GCT Type-specific Incident Cases of GCT Sub-type specific Cases of Gonadal GCT Age-specific Cases of GCT Gender-specific Incident Cases of GCTs Total Incident Cases of GCTs by Stage Total Treatable Cases of GCT Line-wise Treatable Cases of GCT Germ Cell Tumors Treatment Market The treatment approach for germ cell tumors depends on the tumor type, whether ovarian or testicular. Surgery, followed by chemotherapy and sometimes radiation therapy, forms the cornerstone of GCT management. For recurrent testicular cancer, a chemotherapy combination of ifosfamide (Ifex), paclitaxel (Taxol), and cisplatin (Platinol) has proven highly effective. Notably, testicular cancers were among the first cancers successfully treated with radiation or chemotherapy. Over 80% of patients with metastatic germ cell tumors achieve a cure with cisplatin-based chemotherapy, typically the bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) regimen, combined with surgery for residual disease. However, only about 25% of patients who relapse attain long-term survival after second-line cisplatin-based therapy, often using the vinblastine, ifosfamide, and cisplatin (VeIP) regimen. BEP remains the standard first-line chemotherapy for GCTs, effective in both seminomas and nonseminomas. This regimen capitalizes on cisplatin's DNA-damaging properties, etoposide's inhibition of DNA synthesis, and bleomycin's ability to induce DNA strand breaks, resulting in high cure rates. Treatment typically involves 3 to 4 cycles, tailored to disease stage and risk factors. Advancements in surgical techniques, rising incidence rates, and improved post-surgical outcomes have increased the demand for surgical interventions, driving growth in the broader GCT treatment market. Platinum-based chemotherapy , such as the BEP regimen, is highly effective in treating both early and advanced-stage germ cell tumors, while surgical interventions like orchiectomy or oophorectomy also contribute significantly to successful outcomes. Biomarkers such as AFP, hCG, and LDH play a crucial role in diagnosis, staging, and monitoring treatment response, facilitating enhanced clinical decision-making and personalized care. Ongoing research into the genetic and molecular drivers of GCTs holds promise for developing highly effective, less toxic therapies, particularly for refractory or relapsed cases. Furthermore, identifying and validating new biomarkers could improve diagnosis, risk stratification, and relapse detection , advancing personalized treatment approaches for patients, including those with non-secretory tumors. Furthermore, potential therapies are being investigated for the treatment of germ cell tumors, and it is safe to predict that the treatment space will significantly impact the germ cell tumors market during the forecast period. Moreover, the anticipated introduction of emerging therapies with improved efficacy and a further improvement in the diagnosis rate are expected to drive the growth of the germ cell tumors market in the 7MM. However several factors may impede the growth of the germ cell tumors market. Platinum-based chemotherapy is highly effective but is associated with significant acute toxicities , such as nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, as well as long-term effects like secondary malignancies, which can severely impact the quality of life, particularly for young survivors. Additionally, approximately 10–15% of patients develop resistance to first-line therapies , leaving them with few effective options, as salvage treatments are often toxic and have limited success rates. The emergence of resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy, especially in advanced or metastatic cases, poses a significant challenge, threatening the high cure rates associated with GCTs . Furthermore, the cost of advanced therapies , including novel drugs and long-term survivorship care, places a substantial financial burden on patients and healthcare systems, potentially limiting access to effective treatments. Moreover, germ cell tumor treatment poses a significant economic burden and disrupts patients' overall well-being and QOL. Furthermore, germ cell tumors market growth may be offset by failures and discontinuation of emerging therapies , unaffordable pricing , market access and reimbursement issues , and a shortage of healthcare specialists . In addition, the undiagnosed, unreported cases and the unawareness about the disease may also impact germ cell tumors market growth. THE mother of tragic Sara Sharif said yesterday: “It is not human to do this to your own child” after the ten-year-old’s dad was found guilty of her murder. Olga Domin, 38, lost a court battle to keep Sara from the clutches of evil Urfan Sharif, stepmum Beinash Batool and uncle Faisal Malik . She believes the trio, who will be sentenced on Tuesday, should suffer as much as Sara — and die in jail. Her body was found by police in her bunk bed on August 10, 2023. A post mortem uncovered 25 fractures and 71 external injuries, including six human bite marks, and burns from a domestic iron. Last night a friend of Olga said of Sharif: “How could social services ever give Sara to that man? “He’s the worst of the worst. He treated her like a dog. Taxi driver Sharif, 43, throttled Sara and beat her with a cricket bat and metal pole, sometimes tying her hands and legs together with parcel tape. She was made to wear makeshift hoods during attacks and Sharif urged another child to hit her like a punchbag as if it was a game. Batool, 30, often called Sharif back from work saying Sara was being naughty and knowing he would beat her up . Meanwhile, Malik, 29, who lived with them in a flat then a cramped three-bedroom house in Woking, Surrey, failed to raise the alarm whenever Sara was attacked. Sharif hit Sara twice on the abdomen when she lay dying because he thought she was pretending to be ill. The brute refused to call for medical help and it is suspected the three jet-washed Sara’s body before fleeing to Pakistan, leaving her in the bottom bunk. She had started wearing a hijab to school to conceal injuries to her face and head. An Old Bailey jury yesterday found Sharif and Batool guilty of murder following an eight- week trial. Malik was found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child. Polish national Olga said: “I still can’t believe what is going on, this situation. “It’s not human to do this stuff to your own child. I hope he will be dying in jail “I can’t believe he was hitting her belly when she was dying. I still can’t manage that. They should all get the same for what they were doing. Monster is too nice word for him anyway. “I hope he will be dying in jail.” Paying tribute to “angelic” Sara, who dreamed of being on The X Factor, Olga said: “She was always laughing, smiling. "She loved all the kids. She was always helping, and making videos. She was an amazing child. She was saying ‘I’ll be a model’. “I just don’t get why she is where she is.” Sara was living with Olga from 2015, when they fled to a domestic refuge to escape Sharif’s violence. He was having supervised contact at a Sure Start centre in Reading before a family court hearing in 2019 which ruled Sara should live with Urfan. It is understood Olga did not contest the ruling at the time. Friends say Sharif took accusations made against him and threw them back at Olga — and used the same tactic in his trial by blaming Batool for Sara’s murder, before admitting he too beat her up. Olga was allowed contact with Sara, supervised by Batool, but she said the couple blocked this a few years before Sara’s death. The youngster has been laid to rest in Poland in a grave bearing her mum’s surname and adorned with flowers. Olga visits daily. Newly released pictures show Sara playing with other children in a garden, and sitting in front of a teepee which Olga made for her. Olga also said in a statement released through Surrey Police: “My dear Sara, I ask God to please take care of my little girl, she was taken too soon. “Sara had beautiful brown eyes and an angelic voice. Sara’s smile could brighten up the darkest room. “Everyone who knew Sara will know her unique character, her beautiful smile and loud laugh. “She will always be in our hearts , her laughter will bring warmth to our lives. We miss Sara very much. Love you Princess.” Sharif also dished out horrific abuse to Olga, who said he did it all with “really evil eyes”. Sara had beautiful brown eyes and an angelic voice. Sara’s smile could brighten up the darkest room She said: “He choked me with a belt, he tried to set me on fire, he beat me with his fists. He was putting the oil on my body. His friend stopped him. He already had the lighter in his hand.” Olga said Sharif would sleep with money all the time and she had to plead for cash for food for the children. She added: “He told me that he dressed me and no one would help me if I left him because I don’t know the language and I have never worked here. “He said he didn’t like my friend. I wasn’t allowed to meet her. I went to pick up something from the shop and he wouldn’t let me out. I was working nights cleaning the pubs. "They kicked him out of McDonald’s (where he was a shift manager) because he was stealing money. He didn’t have a job. He took all the money from me. “He took £4,000 from (benefits back payment). I took £100 to buy clothes for my kids and he hit me because I took the money. “He would be cunning and would take my phone and he locked me out around three times. “When he did this he had evil eyes, really evil eyes. I was alone in a foreign country, without a language, without a family, until I finally realised that this was not the life I had and left.” Olga was taken to a domestic violence refuge in 2015 and their divorce was completed in 2017. Sick Sharif spent six days lying to Old Bailey jurors, claiming Batool was an “evil psycho” and the “true villain of the piece”. On his seventh day in the witness box, Sharif dramatically confessed to beating Sara with a cricket bat and pole and ultimately killing her. But the self-confessed coward could never bring himself to admit he had murdered Sara. At one point he told the court he beat her repeatedly and intended to cause her “really serious harm” — but he then went back on his testimony insisting he had never meant to hurt her ever. Police found a note by her body, written by Sharif, which said: “I legally punished her and she died.” He choked me with a belt, he tried to set me on fire, he beat me with his fists Once he landed in Pakistan, he called 999 to say: “I’ve killed my daughter. I legally punished her and she died.” Batool and Malik both refused to give evidence. Det Chief Insp Craig Emmerson, of Surrey Police, said the trio only sought to preserve their own interests and showed no remorse. Mr Emerson added: “Sara was a bright and lively little girl who loved singing and dancing. “Sara’s spirit and bravery and resilience in the face of the suffering that she endured has shone through from the vast inquiries that have been undertaken in this case. “Sara’s young life was brought to an end as a result of the brutal abuse and unspeakable violence inflicted on her by Sharif and Batool, which Malik did nothing to prevent.”

Kobayashi went missing Nov. 8 after catching a flight from Hawaii to Los Angeles, with a connecting flight that would ultimately take her to New York, where she planned to visit relatives. Her family became worried after she landed at LAX and sent them cryptic text messages, suggesting that someone was trying to steal her money and identity. No one has heard from her since. McDonnell briefed the L.A. Police Commission about the case during a Nov. 26 meeting . “On Friday, November 8th, 23-year-old Hannah Kobayashi missed her connecting flight from LAX to New York, which the investigation determined was intentional,” McDonnell said. Kobayashi’s sister, Sydni, responded to the statement in a social media post, disputing the development in the case and pointing out that McDonnell incorrectly gave Kobayashi’s age, which is actually 30 years old. Kobayashi’s family also said McDonnell gave an incorrect timeline of Kobayashi’s disappearance. “Based on information, surveillance footage reviewed and information shared with us, these are the facts known to my mother and I: It does not appear that Hannah intentionally missed her flight,” Sydni Kobayashi wrote. “The lack of communication surrounding some important details has left us feeling excluded from potentially crucial developments,” Sydni Kobayashi’s statement said. “However, we do remain hopeful and optimistic that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing everything in their power to assist us in locating Hannah.” According to Kobayashi’s family, she landed at LAX on Nov. 8 and missed her connecting flight to New York City because of a short layover. Kobayashi stayed overnight in Los Angeles and was seen the next day at the Taschen bookstore at the Grove, an open-air shopping mall in the Fairfax District. On Nov. 10, Kobayashi was captured on video outside of a Nike event near the Grove and was believed to have returned to LAX, according to her family’s statement. On Nov. 11, Kobayashi was seen talking to a ticketing agent at LAX; she then boarded the LAX Metro C line at the Aviation/Century station around 9 p.m., her family wrote. She transferred at the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station and was seen in video footage leaving the Pico station with an unknown person. On Nov. 12, Kobayashi was captured again on video footage at the Greyhound bus terminal at Union Station in downtown L.A. around 6:30 a.m., according to her family. LAPD spokesperson Jeff Lee confirmed that the agency is still investigating Kobayashi’s disappearance as an active missing persons case. He said there were no updates to share Monday morning. Anyone with more information has been asked to contact the LAPD at (877) 527-3247. After Kobayashi’s disappearance, her father, Ryan, flew to Los Angeles to help look for his daughter. The elder Kobayashi was found dead last week near LAX in what police say was an apparent suicide. The body of Ryan Kobayashi, 58, was found in a parking lot in the 6100 block of Century Boulevard. According to the Los Angeles County medical examiner, the elder Kobayashi died from blunt force traumatic injuries. “Our hearts go out to the Kobayashi family during this unimaginable time of grief,” McDonnell said during the Police Commission meeting. “We remain fully committed to locating Hannah and supporting the family as they navigate their way through this tragedy.” ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Estonia, which is bordered by Russia and is a member of the alliance, has doubled its defence spending since the war in Ukraine began to 3.4% of its gross domestic product this year, the second largest proportion in NATO, and increased taxes from next year to purchase stockpiles of ammunition for defence. “The task for NATO in the coming 10-20 years will be to contain or deter Russia so it doesn't get any stupid ideas to push towards the West militarily," Director General Kaupo Rosin told Reuters on Tuesday. “I think it's doable, but the issue needs to be taken seriously in the West, and that we invest (in defence)." While Russia has repeatedly denied it has any designs on attacking a NATO country, its defence minister said this week Moscow must be ready to fight the NATO military alliance in Europe in the next decade. Rosin said: “NATO and national military plans must be credible, must be real and must be backed up with real resources, regarding troops present, follow on units, ammunition. If we do our homework properly, then we will be able to deter Russia." While he said it was hard for him to envisage Russia negotiating over Ukraine any time soon, he said Russia would be “trying to limit NATO’s activities, NATO infrastructure and the troop presence in the vicinity of Russia”, including in NATO’s eastern flank states. President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he was ready to compromise over Ukraine in possible talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on ending the war and had no conditions for starting talks with the Ukrainian authorities. Touching also on China during the interview, the top Estonian spy said there could be a risk of blackmail from China if Estonia did not ban Chinese technology in crucial parts of the economy, such as in solar inverters, which connect solar panels to the grid and which could be switched off remotely. “If there would be a situation where China would like to push us towards a political decision, and some sectors are, in reality, not under our control. That would mean all this equipment would be manipulable from China," said Rosin. “This scenario is maybe not real today, but we have to avoid that this scenario becomes reality one day." His comments chime with those of NATO chief Mark Rutte, who said early this month the alliance would step up intelligence sharing and improve the protection of critical infrastructure in the face of "hostile" acts of sabotage against allies by Russia and China. Russia has dismissed multiple accusations of engaging in hybrid acts. China has repeatedly denied allegations of spying in Europe. China has also begun in recent years to call out alleged Western hacking operations. Sign up here. Acclaimed Qatari artist Bouthayna al-Muftah highlighted the power of art in fostering dialogue and cultural exchange at the recently held Doha Forum, citing the transformative impact of artistic expression in connecting diverse audiences. Drawing from her collaborative experiences with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, al-Muftah noted that her first immersive installation, ‘Echoes’, debuted in the museum’s project space, saying: “It was a very nice exchange of knowledge between artist and curator,” she pointed out. “They learned about my work, and I learned from them, especially in creating my first immersive installation”. She said “Echoes”, which debuted at Mathaf in 2018, explores human interaction amidst rapid technological advancements. The international reach of al-Muftah’s work was further underscored by Echoes’ inclusion in the “Our World is Burning” exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. This international exposure, she noted, allowed her to share a piece of Qatari culture with a global audience, fostering cross-cultural understanding. At the panel discussion “Promoting Dialogue and Diversity Through Art,” she discussed how partnerships with museums, especially with Mathaf, influenced her artistic vision and broadened her understanding of art’s impact. Echoes served as a main example, inviting viewers to step into the artwork and leave their own mark. The exhibition, deeply rooted in personal memories and family stories, incorporated Arabic script and mirrors, creating a reflective experience that blended personal narrative with shared cultural memory. Al-Muftah’s “Aubusson Tapestry” project, part of the Qatar – France Year of Culture 2020, saw her combining traditional Qatari textile traditions with the renowned French tapestry techniques of Aubusson. “This was the same with the ‘Aubusson Tapestry’ (project) that I spoke about before. It brings forgotten narratives from my art and combining it with traditional craftsmanship in the tapestry, it’s a really nice way of curating this cultural diplomacy,” she said. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, al-Muftah has developed a multidisciplinary approach that includes printmaking, typography, drawing, and bookbinding. Al-Muftah said her work often integrates Qatari oral traditions and collective memory, with Arabic script playing a central role but not always in the literal form. She added that her use of script evolves beyond calligraphy into typographic expressions, rooted in journaling and archival practices. Some of al-Muftah’s notable works like Um al Salasil Wil Thahab, a portrait series depicting life in Qatari neighbourhoods, and her bookbinding projects further showcase her dedication to preserving and reimagining cultural traditions (Source: Mathaf). bookmaker en français SAN ANTONIO – Linebackers coach Andre Hart was in midseason form Tuesday morning as his players went through individual drills. The Colorado assistant was on his players as they worked out at the UTSA football facility for the first time this week in preparation for Saturday’s Valero Alamo Bowl against BYU (5:30 p.m. MT, ABC). “I needed to make sure they understood just because we’re in Texas, we’re gonna coach like we’re in Colorado,” Hart said. “We’re gonna get our job done today.” After reaching a bowl game for the first time since the 2020 Alamo Bowl, the Buffs are intent on doing all they can to come away with a win. Tuesday wasn’t the best start in Texas, though, according to Hart. “I don’t think the energy or the focus was to our standards, to be honest with you,” Hart said. “We want high standards, and we have a ceiling. So whatever you expect to get out of this bowl practice, if it’s not our standards, it’s not enough.” Fortunately for the Buffs, there’s still more practice before Saturday’s game. “Just keep pushing them, to make sure we get the very best out of them,” Hart said. “I think that’s what you have to do to be a good coach. Give them the praises on the things they do right, but always find something that you can correct and get better at. So the energy was not there to where we needed to be (Tuesday), and tomorrow we’ve got to come out a lot sharper.” While Tuesday may not have been up to CU’s usual standards, head coach Deion Sanders had been pleased with the bowl preparation leading up to the flight to San Antonio on Monday, calling it “great.” CU certainly can’t blame the facilities. The Buffs enjoyed their first look at the RACE (Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence) facility at UTSA, a $40.4 million venue that opened in 2021. “I like what we had, as far as the space they gave us, the locker rooms opening up,” Hart said. “We really appreciated that. And then also the field, you know, having a grass and a turf field to work back and forth on gives you the space, and letting us use their equipment. That’s really big. I’ve never been to UTSA’s facility, but it’s a really nice facility. I mean, I was really impressed.” So was senior defensive end BJ Green, who also enjoyed being away from Colorado’s elevation. “I’m really appreciative of UTSA allowing us to use their facilities,” Green said. “The turf and the grass is really, really nice. It’s also cool to be below all that altitude. I can breathe. It’s great.” Although Tuesday wasn’t CU’s best practice, Green is confident the Buffs have come to San Antonio with the right mentality, led by a veteran coaching staff. “Even though the team doesn’t have as much bowl experience, we have a lot of people on staff who have (experience in) bowls, Super Bowl experience,” Green said. “So just having those types of people on staff, they know what the expectation is, and they implement that for the guys who don’t know what it looks like. So for the guys who do know it looks like, we carry it along as well.” Green is one who knows what bowl prep looks like. In 2021, he went to the Las Vegas Bowl when he played at Arizona State. It took a while to get back to a bowl, though, and the process to get here and the reward of being in San Antonio isn’t lost on Green. “It’s a blessing,” he said. “I’ve only been to one bowl game in my college career. So just take it all in. Winning is hard, so being at this point, getting as far as we did when people said we wouldn’t is a blessing. And being at a prestigious bowl like the Alamo Bowl is a blessing. “Even night one (on Monday), just seeing all the festivities and stuff, was just something we had to just take in. We’re all happy to be here.”

"I have great respect for Leverkusen and my former teammates, but my priority now is to give my all for Inter Milan and help the team achieve our goals. We have a talented squad capable of competing at the highest level, and I believe we can go far in the Champions League this season," Calhanoglu added.None

Emmerdale fans were left shocked during the latest episode as 'creepy' Tom King escalated his abusive behaviour. In Tuesday's episode (November 26), Belle, Tom's estranged wife, struggled to maintain her composure after learning that Tom, who is currently under investigation, was acting as if nothing had happened. Belle was further upset when she found out that some of her friends in the village were still supporting him despite the abuse she suffered during their marriage. Despite her family's pleas for her to stay calm, Belle feared that the investigation might not go as planned and that Tom could escape punishment for his terrible actions. Later in the episode, upon learning that Belle had returned to the village after a stint in a mental health facility, Tom's obsession intensified. He broke into Jacob's Fold, where Belle was staying, and prowled around the house while Belle was upstairs taking a bath. Rifling through her suitcase on the living room floor, Tom found Belle's blue jumper and held it close to his face, inhaling its scent. When he thought Belle might be coming downstairs, he quickly hid with the blue jumper. Unaware that Tom was in the house, Belle went to the suitcase to get a towel, reports Leeds Live . Later, Tom encountered Belle on Main Street and was quick to verbally attack her, dismissing her plans to bring him down as pointless. In a later scene, Tom gifted Amelia with Belle's blue jumper, an act that disturbed viewers who took to social media platform X to voice their concerns. One viewer commented: "OMG, Tom stealing Belle's top and encouraging Amelia to wear it reminded me of Nish abusing Suki in # EastEnders at the beginning. This is going beyond abuse now for Belle it's turning into a creepy and sinister obsession. At least Tom gets charged this week." Another viewer expressed: "Just finished watching tonight's episode # Emmerdale . Tom you are a creep! ! Can't wait for him too get charged. " They added: "Nice too see belle back can't wait for her too get justice soon." A third viewer posted: "Tom you absolute creep." While another remarked: "Nicking Belle's top and giving it to Amelia so she can smell like Belle." By BEN FINLEY The Christmas tradition has become nearly global in scope: Children from around the world track Santa Claus as he sweeps across the earth, delivering presents and defying time. National News | Mega Millions jackpot nears $1 billion ahead of Christmas Eve drawing Each year, at least 100,000 kids call into the North American Aerospace Defense Command to inquire about Santa’s location. Millions more follow online in nine languages , from English to Japanese. On any other night, NORAD is scanning the heavens for potential threats , such as last year’s Chinese spy balloon . But on Christmas Eve, volunteers in Colorado Springs are fielding questions like, “When is Santa coming to my house?” and, “Am I on the naughty or nice list?” “There are screams and giggles and laughter,” said Bob Sommers, 63, a civilian contractor and NORAD volunteer. Sommers often says on the call that everyone must be asleep before Santa arrives, prompting parents to say, “Do you hear what he said? We got to go to bed early.” NORAD’s annual tracking of Santa has endured since the Cold War , predating ugly sweater parties and Mariah Carey classics . The tradition continues regardless of government shutdowns, such as the one in 2018 , and this year . Here’s how it began and why the phones keep ringing. It started with a child’s accidental phone call in 1955. The Colorado Springs newspaper printed a Sears advertisement that encouraged children to call Santa, listing a phone number. A boy called. But he reached the Continental Air Defense Command, now NORAD, a joint U.S. and Canadian effort to spot potential enemy attacks. Tensions were growing with the Soviet Union, along with anxieties about nuclear war. Air Force Col. Harry W. Shoup picked up an emergency-only “red phone” and was greeted by a tiny voice that began to recite a Christmas wish list. “He went on a little bit, and he takes a breath, then says, ‘Hey, you’re not Santa,’” Shoup told The Associated Press in 1999. Realizing an explanation would be lost on the youngster, Shoup summoned a deep, jolly voice and replied, “Ho, ho, ho! Yes, I am Santa Claus. Have you been a good boy?” Shoup said he learned from the boy’s mother that Sears mistakenly printed the top-secret number. He hung up, but the phone soon rang again with a young girl reciting her Christmas list. Fifty calls a day followed, he said. In the pre-digital age, the agency used a 60-by-80 foot (18-by-24 meter) plexiglass map of North America to track unidentified objects. A staff member jokingly drew Santa and his sleigh over the North Pole. The tradition was born. “Note to the kiddies,” began an AP story from Colorado Springs on Dec. 23, 1955. “Santa Claus Friday was assured safe passage into the United States by the Continental Air Defense Command.” In a likely reference to the Soviets, the article noted that Santa was guarded against possible attack from “those who do not believe in Christmas.” Some grinchy journalists have nitpicked Shoup’s story, questioning whether a misprint or a misdial prompted the boy’s call. In 2014, tech news site Gizmodo cited an International News Service story from Dec. 1, 1955, about a child’s call to Shoup. Published in the Pasadena Independent, the article said the child reversed two digits in the Sears number. “When a childish voice asked COC commander Col. Harry Shoup, if there was a Santa Claus at the North Pole, he answered much more roughly than he should — considering the season: ‘There may be a guy called Santa Claus at the North Pole, but he’s not the one I worry about coming from that direction,’” Shoup said in the brief piece. In 2015, The Atlantic magazine doubted the flood of calls to the secret line, while noting that Shoup had a flair for public relations. Phone calls aside, Shoup was indeed media savvy. In 1986, he told the Scripps Howard News Service that he recognized an opportunity when a staff member drew Santa on the glass map in 1955. A lieutenant colonel promised to have it erased. But Shoup said, “You leave it right there,” and summoned public affairs. Shoup wanted to boost morale for the troops and public alike. “Why, it made the military look good — like we’re not all a bunch of snobs who don’t care about Santa Claus,” he said. Shoup died in 2009. His children told the StoryCorps podcast in 2014 that it was a misprinted Sears ad that prompted the phone calls. “And later in life he got letters from all over the world,” said Terri Van Keuren, a daughter. “People saying ‘Thank you, Colonel, for having, you know, this sense of humor.’” NORAD’s tradition is one of the few modern additions to the centuries-old Santa story that have endured, according to Gerry Bowler, a Canadian historian who spoke to the AP in 2010. Ad campaigns or movies try to “kidnap” Santa for commercial purposes, said Bowler, who wrote “Santa Claus: A Biography.” NORAD, by contrast, takes an essential element of Santa’s story and views it through a technological lens. In a recent interview with the AP, Air Force Lt. Gen. Case Cunningham explained that NORAD radars in Alaska and Canada —- known as the northern warning system — are the first to detect Santa. He leaves the North Pole and typically heads for the international dateline in the Pacific Ocean. From there he moves west, following the night. “That’s when the satellite systems we use to track and identify targets of interest every single day start to kick in,” Cunningham said. “A probably little-known fact is that Rudolph’s nose that glows red emanates a lot of heat. And so those satellites track (Santa) through that heat source.” NORAD has an app and website, www.noradsanta.org , that will track Santa on Christmas Eve from 4 a.m. to midnight, mountain standard time. People can call 1-877-HI-NORAD to ask live operators about Santa’s location from 6 a.m. to midnight, mountain time.

In conclusion, the incident serves as a reminder of the power of rumors and the importance of seeking accurate information before jumping to conclusions. It also highlights the need for proper vehicle maintenance and safety protocols to be followed by drivers at all times. As the driving student continues their journey towards obtaining their driver's license, they can look back at this incident as a valuable lesson in perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity.
