A pair of teams with minimal rest will face off in Nassau, Bahamas, on Sunday when No. 22 St. John takes on Georgia. St. John's (5-1), which will play its third game in four days, began the stretch in the Bahamas Championship on Thursday, dropping a heartbreaker to No. 13 Baylor. The Red Storm led by 18 in the first half before Baylor forced overtime. From there, St. John's rallied from five down with 1:47 left to send the game to a second overtime, where it saw Baylor knock down a pair of 3-pointers in the final seven seconds -- including Jeremy Roach's buzzer-beater -- to knock off the Red Storm 99-98. In the third-place game on Friday, St. John's breezed past Virginia 80-55. RJ Luis Jr. led the way with 18 points and four steals, followed by Kadary Richmond's 12 points, as the Red Storm took a one-point lead with 15:21 left in the first half and didn't trail again. "I'm really impressed with our guys, coming off a double-overtime, extremely emotional loss," St. John's head coach Rick Pitino said. "To respond that way was extremely impressive, both offensively and defensively." Pitino, in his second year with the Red Storm, was moved by something off the court on Friday, involving captain Zuby Ejiofor, who chipped in eight points, nine boards, two steals and two blocks. Ejiofor was serenaded by St. John's fans during the win, following his two missed free throws at the end of double overtime against Baylor. "When you've only been in a job for a year, you search for things you love about a place," Pitino said. "Tonight I found out what I love about St. John's. Our fans chanted Zuby's name the whole game, which doesn't happen anywhere else in America. I was really impressed with our fans and I thank them for making Zuby feel good, because he gives you all the energy." Luis leads the Red Storm with 17.3 points per game, followed by Ejiofor (10.7), Aaron Scott (10.5), Deivon Smith (10.3) and Richmond (10.2). Georgia enters Sunday's matchup looking to rebound from its first loss after falling to No. 15 Marquette 80-69 on Saturday. Georgia (5-1) battled back from a 15-point, second-half deficit, but was held to just three points over the final 4:57 in Saturday's loss. Blue Cain led the Bulldogs with a season-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers. "It's a process. It's a journey with this team," Bulldogs head coach Mike White said. "It's about continuing to make strides, continuing to protect our culture. ... At the end of the day, wins and losses are going to take care of themselves. We just have to embrace the process and enjoy it." Five-star freshman recruit Asa Newell was held to a season-low nine points but leads the team with 15.5 points per game. Silas Demary Jr. is second with 13.8. --Field Level MediaThe UK government is taking a tougher stance on protecting children online, threatening tech platforms to introduce stricter regulation unless they introduce measures that will keep kids away from harmful content. Developers of age assurance technology should play a part in that, according to UK’s Technology Secretary Peter Kyle. The Online Safety Act should be implemented “as quickly and effectively as possible,” according to a new document released last Wednesday by the UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology. The Draft Statement of Strategic Priorities outlines the government’s key focus areas for online safety. The new document is a part of the Technology Secretary’s drive to ensure tech companies will comply with the Online Safety Act, last year. The regulation requires companies to keep children away from harmful and age-inappropriate content, including pornography, violence, hate, bullying, content supporting suicide, self-harm or eating disorders and others. Since the introduction of the new regulation, however, have been brewing that the Act may not live up to its expectations. Kyle, who was appointed as head of the by the new Labor government in July, is hoping to disprove this. Enforcement of the regulation falls on the UK’s communications regulator Ofcom which has the power to fines tech firms of up to 18 million pounds (US$22.6 million) or 10 percent of their annual global turnover for non-compliance. The Secretary told the media last week that he wants the agency to take a stricter stance toward policing social media companies that have been operating in a “gray area.” “Some of these companies are spending more on R&D than the British state is in total. So don’t tell me you can’t throw some resources together and have a conversation about how things like age verification can be made more robust, and that safety can’t be built in,” Kyle said in an with The Telegraph. Ofcom’s tasks include publishing Codes of Practice and providing guidance on how companies can comply with their duties. The first edition of the Illegal Harms Codes of Practice and the illegal content risk assessment guidance is expected to be made public in December 2024. The Draft Statement of Strategic Priorities places effective age assurance among its key focuses. “Services should take advantage of the technologies that are already available to identify child users and ensure that they cannot access harmful content on their services,” says the draft. “Age assurance should be deployed consistently, effectively and fairly to users from all backgrounds and age ranges.” The document also notes that the government has been supporting the development of third-party solutions for online harm through funding grants, hackathons and innovation challenges. This will help Ofcom outline ambitious recommendations for adopting technologies for online services. “The UK safety tech sector has an important role to play by developing innovative solutions to support platforms, improve online safety outcomes and enable agile regulation,” says the document. The strategy also outlines focuses such as safety by design or preventing online harm, increasing transparency and accountability of online platforms maintaining regulatory agility to keep pace with changing technology and behavior as well as building an inclusive and resilient online society. According to the Technology Secretary, tech firms have been claiming that age verification technology cannot yet provide the highly effective age checks required to enforce restricting social media use for children under the age of 13. However, companies already have the technology to understand people’s personalities which means they can understand a person’s age “with some precision,” he notes. Kyle explained that the government is reluctant to introduce new regulations before it sees the effects of the Online Safety Act. But he also promised the country would not hesitate to introduce more strict solutions to keep children safe online, including legislation similar to Australia. Last week, the country a bill in parliament that aims to ban social media for children under 16. For now, the Online Safety Act is proving effective at least for some tech firms, he adds. Instagram has been rolling out , including verifying users’ age by using Yoti’s facial age estimation or by uploading an identity document. Online gaming platform Roblox also this month that it plans to limit children under 13 from messaging other users. The decision was welcomed by Ofcom. | | | | | | | | | |
His Majesty’s Ankara visit forges stronger ties
Google and the US government faced off in a federal court on Monday, as each side delivered closing arguments in a case revolving around the technology giant's alleged unfair domination of online advertising. The trial in a Virginia federal court is Google's second US antitrust case now under way as the US government tries to rein in the power of big tech. In a separate trial, a Washington judge ruled that Google's search business is an illegal monopoly, and the US Justice Department is asking that Google sell its Chrome browser business to resolve the case. The latest case, also brought by the Justice Department, focuses on ad technology for the open web -- the complex system determining which online ads people see when they surf the internet. The vast majority of websites use a trio of Google ad software products that together, leave no way for publishers to escape Google's advertising technology, the plaintiffs allege. Publishers -- including News Corp and Gannett publishing -- complain that they are locked into Google's advertising technology in order to run ads on their websites. "Google is once, twice, three times a monopolist," DOJ lawyer Aaron Teitelbaum told the court in closing arguments. Presiding judge Leonie Brinkema has said that she would deliver her opinion swiftly, as early as next month. Whatever Brinkema's judgment, the outcome will almost certainly be appealed, prolonging a process that could go all the way to the US Supreme Court. The government alleges that Google controls the auction-style system that advertisers use to purchase advertising space online. The US lawyers argue that this approach allows Google to charge higher prices to advertisers while sending less revenue to publishers such as news websites, many of which are struggling to stay in business. The US argues that Google used its financial power to acquire potential rivals and corner the ad tech market, leaving advertisers and publishers with no choice but to use its technology. The government wants Google to divest parts of its ad tech business. Google dismissed the allegations as an attempt by the government to pick "winners and losers" in a diverse market. The company argues that the display ads at issue are just a small share of today's ad tech business. Google says the plaintiffs' definition of the market ignores ads that are also placed in search results, apps and social media platforms and where, taken as a whole, Google does not dominate. "The law simply does not support what the plaintiffs are arguing in this case," said Google's lawyer Karen Dunn. She warned that if Google were to lose the case, the winners would be rival tech giants such as Microsoft, Meta or Amazon, whose market share in online advertising is ascendant as Google's share is falling. The DOJ countered that it simply "does not matter" that Google is competing in the broader market for online ads. "That is a different question" than the market for ads on websites that is the target of the case, said Teitelbaum. Google also points to US legal precedent, saying arguments similar to the government's have been refuted in previous antitrust cases. Dunn also warned that forcing Google to work with rivals in its ad products would amount to government central planning that the court should reject. If the judge finds Google to be at fault, a new phase of the trial would decide how the company should comply with that conclusion. And all that could be moot if the incoming Trump administration decides to drop the case. The president-elect has been a critic of Google's, but he warned earlier this month that breaking it up could be "a very dangerous thing." arp/dwNone

Looking At Cisco Systems's Recent Unusual Options ActivityCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Arkansas defensive end Landon Jackson was carted off the field and taken to a hospital with a neck injury late in the first half of Saturday's game at No. 24 Missouri. Jackson appeared to injure his neck while trying to tackle Missouri running back Jamal Roberts. Medical personnel tended to Jackson for approximately 10 minutes before he was placed on a backboard and driven to a waiting ambulance. Jackson gave a thumbs-up sign as he was carted off the snow-covered field. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek said Jackson had movement in his arms and legs but was experiencing pain in his neck. He said Jackson was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Jackson leads the Razorbacks with 9 1/2 tackles for loss and 6 1/2 sacks, and is considered a potential first-round pick in next year's NFL draft. PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Luke Altmyer found Pat Bryant for a catch-and-run, 40-yard touchdown pass with 4 seconds left, sending No. 24 Illinois to a wild 38-31 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Illinois (8-3, 5-3 Big Ten) was down 31-30 when it sent long kicker Ethan Moczulski out for a desperation 58-yard field goal with 14 seconds to go. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano then called for a timeout right before Moczulski’s attempt was wide left and about 15 yards short. After the missed field goal was waved off by the timeout, Illinois coach Bret Bielema sent his offense back on the field. Altmyer hit Bryant on an in cut on the left side at the 22, and he continued across the field and scored untouched in a game that featured three lead changes in the final 3:07. Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) gave up a safety on the final kickoff return, throwing a ball out of bounds in the end zone as players passed it around hoping for a miracle touchdown. Altmyer was 12-of-26 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Bryant finished with seven receptions for 197 yards. Altmeyer put Illinois in front with a 30-yard TD run with 3:07 to go. He passed to Josh McCray on the 2-point conversion, making it 30-24. Rutgers responded with a 10-play, 65-yard drive. Athan Kaliakmanis had a 15-yard run on fourth down. He passed to running back Kyle Manangai for a 13-yard TD with 1:08 remaining. Illinois then drove 75 yards in eight plays for the unexpected win. Kaliakmanis was 18 for 36 for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 13 carries for 84 yards and two TDs. Monangai had a career-high 28 carries for 122 yards. Kaliakmanis found Ian Strong for a 2-yard touchdown in the final seconds of the first half, and he scored on a 1-yard run to lift Rutgers to a 24-15 lead early in the fourth quarter. Illinois responded with Aidan Laughery’s 8-yard TD run, setting up the roller-coaster finish. The start of the second half was delayed because of a scrum between the teams. There were no punches thrown and the officials called penalties on both schools. Monangai become the third player in Rutgers history to rush for 3,000 yards when he picked up 4 on a third-and-1 carry early in the second quarter. The defending conference rushing champion joins Ray Rice and Terrell Willis in hitting the mark. Illinois: The great finish keeps the Illini in line for its first nine-win season since 2007 and a prestigious bowl game this season. Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights were seconds away from their first in-conference three-game win streak since joining the Big Ten in 2014. Illinois: At Northwestern next Saturday. Abba-Wakilbe noted that the rehabilitation effort is part of a broader plan to address the damages caused by the floods, which have disrupted education for many students in the state. The Commissioner emphasized the government’s strong commitment to restoring learning facilities and ensuring uninterrupted education. He noted that the N1.6 billion will be allocated directly to the affected schools through the School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), which will oversee the implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) for each institution. Abba-Wakilbe stressed that the committees have earned a reputation for effectively managing previous projects, and they will ensure that the rehabilitation funds are used efficiently. The amount allocated to each school will be determined based on the level of damage sustained. The Commissioner also announced that the rehabilitation initiative will extend beyond the schools to include the state’s Library Board and the Scholarship Board, further strengthening the restoration of educational resources across Borno. Abba-Wakilbe stressed that the Borno State Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation has set up a monitoring team to ensure the proper use of the funds. To enhance transparency, he revealed that plans are also underway to engage an auditor and financial consultant to oversee the process. The Commissioner urged school management without operational accounts to open them promptly to facilitate the fund distribution. The report also noted that the announcement has received widespread support from educators and parents, with many expressing optimism that the rehabilitation efforts will help students return to a safer, more stable learning environment.
East Tennessee State University football coach Tre Lamb is getting nice reward for the Bucs’ improved performance. The coach and the university agreed to a contract extension through 2028 with a $275,000 per year base pay with incentives for Southern Conference championships, FCS playoff berths and Coach of the Year awards. His original contract in 2023 was for four years with $225,000 per year base pay. Heading into Saturday’s game with VMI where freshman Baylor Hayes is scheduled to make his first start, the Bucs are 6-5 after back-to-back 3-8 campaigns the previous two years. Lamb, who was hired as the Bucs coach Nov. 27, 2023, stated in a press release and phone interview the move shows a commitment to the program from both ETSU administration and himself. “We have had a quick turnaround to success and competitiveness in the Southern Conference in 11 short months,” Lamb said in a press release. “We have a vision of building a perennial playoff team and winning big games in our program. The belief from within our program is very strong to deliver championships to Johnson City and Northeast Tennessee.” Lamb said it was important to get the deal done quickly and the news out to recruits with the early signing period December 4-6. Lamb had been mentioned as a candidate for potential coaching vacancies. “It’s really important for retaining players. You hear coaching rumors all the time, so it’s big for those guys as well as recruits, transfers and high school players,” Lamb said. “We’ve got six defensive high school commitments and recruiting season is upon us. It’s big for those young men and their families.” Lamb also talked about building momentum. The Bucs are looking to become just the 11th team in program history to win at least seven games in a season. ETSU has been ranked as high as No. 21 in the STATS Perform FCS Top 25 Poll. “It was the right time to solidify what we’re doing,” Lamb said. “I’m appreciative to (ETSU President) Dr. (Brian) Noland, (athletic director) Doc (Richard) Sander and the administration for getting it done. You see it across the country. Texas State’s coach signed a deal yesterday. It’s a good move by the administration to be proactive before jobs come open the next few weeks.” Sander said in a statement that he was excited about the progress made by Lamb and his coaching staff in his first year. Adding the administration strongly believes in Lamb and the future is exceptionally bright under his leadership. Prior to ETSU, Lamb spent four seasons as head coach at Gardner-Webb where he led the Runnin’ Bulldogs to back-to-back conference championships and FCS playoff appearances. He explained a long-term commitment to ETSU was about more than football. “Family had a lot to do with it. We have two little girls and my oldest one has moved three times,” Lamb said. “My wife and I really love Johnson City. We need to be planted and grow where our feet are.” He emphasized the potential he sees at ETSU. He also mentioned working with the other coaches within the athletic department. “We want to build this thing into a championship contender. I thought we were 3-4 big plays away from being 9-2 or 10-1,” Lamb said. “We learned a lot about the Southern Conference and I like the stability of it. I like all our coaches across the sports landscape at ETSU. We’ve got a lot of good head coaches and staff. Any time you have the trajectory moving up, you have to make sure you don’t take it for granted.”Percentages: FG .547, FT .725. 3-Point Goals: 12-22, .545 (Hunter 7-10, Rogers 3-6, Carter 1-2, Haggerty 1-4). The result ended a run of 10 straight matches without a win across all competitions for the Grey Owls, and six in a row in the Turkish Super Lig , helping them climb to seventh in the table with 19 points. Cagdas Atan 's side are now four points behind fourth-placed Eyupspor who have played one extra game, and will be looking to go on a good run to catch them, starting from the game against lowly-placed Hatayspor. Basaksehir have won their last four matches across all competitions against Sunday's opposition, including one via penalties in the Turkish Cup. The Grey Owls have also won their last three home matches in the Super Lig against the visitors, scoring seven and conceding none in those games. © Imago Hatayspor are now unbeaten in their last three Super Lig matches, following up a win against Gaziantep with 1-1 draws against Konyaspor and most recently, Besiktas. The Star of the South took the lead one minute before the half-hour mark via Gorkem Saglam , but they could not hold on to the lead, conceding four minutes before the break. However, Riza Calimbay 's side are still stuck in the relegation zone with eight points from 13 matches, leaving them second bottom in the league, with only Adana Demirspor behind them in the standings and six points between them and safety. The Star of the South will be welcome visitors, given they have the joint-worst away record in the league, recording just two points after six matches on the road. Hatayspor will remain without midfielder Massanga Matondo , who is sidelined until the middle of this month due to a foot injury. Carlos Strandberg bagged a brace in the cup win on Thursday and will be hoping to play from the start after playing a substitute role in the last league game.
